I bought a Viewsonic VP930 about a month ago from OcUK, i love the viewing angles, image quality and the overall shiftability of the monitor. My problem is that whenever the monitor displays black ie whenever i play any dark games or watch dvds i get bad backlight bleeding, i see basically a grey "X" whenever the screen is totally black with the corners being the brightest, transitioning to black the middle.

It is really distracting especially when playing games, the funny thing is that its perfect when not displaying black or dark grey, it displays colours brightly and both images and text are crisp.

What i have noticed is that it does not do this until about 5 minutes after i switch it on.

What can i do to fix this?
Is my monitor up too bright?
Are there certain settings that make this go away?
Have i got a dodgy monitor?

Im in a bit of a pickle here because i cant really return the monitor unless i spend fair few quid sending it back as i live in northern ireland, besides i damaged the packaging taking the thing out.

Should i make the effort and send this back for another one? I dont want to be sitting with the same problem i have now.

This is a real pitty because this is a great monitor when not displaying black, its great for watching movies in bed for example.

Any advise anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

I forgot to add that if there is any other monitor i could exchange this for with the same functionality as the VP930 i would consider it as an alternative.

sounds like you have some issues with the uniformity of the panel, and sadly this can often be an issue to a small extent on many screens. It's just down to how they are built, but some show it more obviously than others. It sounds like you only begin to notice it once the CCFL backlighting has had chance to warm up after being on for 5 minutes or so. You might well find that if you alter the brightness, contrast and / or gamma settings for your monitor and graphics card that you find it a lot less noticable....worth trying

I had the same problem with my VP930 at first.
But then I made some changes in settings and know I dont notice this bleeding even in pitch black room.
I dont use sRGB
contrast is 70 and brightness is 38
and calibrating soft shows also, that these settings are fine for my screen...

I have had my VP930 for a bout 3 weeks great panel, I also believe it is if the panel is set to bright, while we are on the subject of the VP930, anyone had a problem with fuzzy windows text (a little thin looking) on the DVI connection, I have tried two graphic cards one looks slightly better then the other, the D-Sub connection is fantastic nice bold text,
Video and still pictures look great on both DVI & D-SUB.
Both cards are AGP one is a NVIDIA GeForce 5200 128mb, the other is a 6200 256mb.
Running the VP930 at 1280 x 768

Thank you guys for such a prompt reply, Newfilm i tried what you said but with the brightness/contrast at those settings the bleeding is still as bad. Im using the monitor on a geforce 7800gtx on the dvi connection, would changing to analogue connection make any difference?

What colour temperature are you using Newfilm? Would that make a difference?

Baddass will it make any difference if i continue to use sRGB and adjust the brightness etc from my graphics card control panel?

Hopefully i can figure out a way to lessen the bleeding so that i can live with it, as this monitor is the best ive had for image quality. Its just a pitty that in todays society we have to make do with pc components that are not manufactured/tested/developed properly, we are spending a lot of money on these things.

Anyway ill not take up all your time by posting useless nonsense that you already know, thank you once again for all your advise and i hope you can help me further.

RaidersGuy why not use 1280x1024 the native res.???

Hi, I wonder why u r not using the native resolution for it will make the text look wonderful.

Try it.....
I think u will like it.......

Mistake sorry I'm using 1280 x 1024, the text problem is on the windows menus like the properties windows etc and in outlook and some websites in internet explorer, some time some colour tinge.
Our friend with back light issue, does it notice when viewed strait at it or just to the side, also if I have the lights dimmed I notice my corners a little, specially the bottom right, but in normal daylight it’s hard to detect, I'm fussy as well, so I know what you’re going through.
Use a reasonable black screen with something we can see like the windows desktop with a small picture in the middle and a black desktop backing, I will try the same if you want me too.

I also have the VP930, had it for 3 weeks, it is a superb monitor. When I have the screen saver on with a black background I also notice the same backlight problem, although it doesn't seem as bad since I calibrated the monitor with calibration software. I know what you mean about the text, when using the dvi connection it does seem thinner in some applications, have you tried using clear type instead.

no, you can calibrate it either way, just get it set to levels which you find comfortable and don't show obvious backlight problems. A lot of TFT's are way too birght by default.

If you right click on the desktop, and choose properties, appearance, effects and in the dropdown box choose clear type instead of standard, seems some people prefer to use it, I personally stick with standard.

I have managed to adjust the brightness so that the bleeding is not as bad as it was, though the screen is not as bright the image quality seems to be just as good.

Cheers Baddass for your advise, if you are ever over in belfast ill buy you a pint!

It seems its only when i look at it head on, though i notice its brighter in more corners than others when looking at it at an angle.

I dont understand what you meant when you said this, i have tested the screen when it has a completely black backround and also in games. I dont know if i can take a photo of it and post it here as i only have a crappy camera phone, though if you wish i can try.

What calibration software did you use?
The one that came with the monitor?
I uninstalled it as i dont like programs taking up memory in the taskbar.

The only reason I suggested the black background with a picture was I have seen on other forums people taking black backgrounds without a picture in the middle, and there is no way of judging how bright they have the brightness on the monitor also the camera if in auto will up the level as well, don’t worry I was just wanted to see if it’s any worse or better than mine, when I first had mine I was looking for it but now I don’t I'm just glad I don’t have dead pixels, but you probable guest I do have a DVI issue but I can’t see no difference in picture quality between DVI and D-SUB any way so I’ll stick with D-SUB.
I also don’t use any software for the menus etc either (as supplied on the CD).
