Help With Vista 64 Gaming

I'm having troubles with my PC's performance and I was wondering if people could tell me if it's Vista 64 that's at fault...

I'm getting the following performance in my games:


Call of Duty 2 - Often 30-40 FPS when there's fighting taking place.

Maximum in-game and Control Panel settings - 1920x1080 res.



Warhammer 40k: DoW: WA - 30-40FPS when there's a lot of enemies on screen or constantly on some levels.

Maximum in-game and Control Panel settings - 1280x1024 res.

(Original DoW ran rock solid 60FPS on my 8800GTX)


Age of Empires III - 20-25 FPS when there's a lot happening on screen (I'm not sure any cards can handle this game yet though)

Maximum in-game and Control Panel settings - 1920x1080 res.

I came to this forum as I was hoping that some people who own these games and Vista 64 could tell me if the FPS I'm experiencing is normal.
 
I was getting problems with performance,tried everything bar getting the latest graphics driver:rolleyes:got the latest driver and all my problems went away,now i've no doubt you have tried the latest drivers,as you probably aint a complete div like me,but thought i'd post incase there was a dim chance you haven't;)
 
Thanks for suggestion but yes - I'm running latest drivers on a fresh install.

I was initially running earlier ones but had similar issues. Also running the 4870 (ATi), gave me the same problems.

Well all i can say is i've got no problems with vista64 and gaming,i do hope you sort it though;)
 
Have you installed motherboard drivers? Vista installs its own crappy ones and pretends everything is fine, but you should get the latest vista 64 specific ones from your mobo manufacturer.

Do you run any of the games I mentioned?

Someone stated in another thread that the games could be running crap because they are old and Vista doesn't run them well.

That was the first thing I installed after Vista loaded for the first time. ;)
 
I had this trouble also i was on lagging on games my pc should own and i just bascily gave up, went back to xp pro 64 bit.

Them games are kinda old maybe there vista/graphics card support issues, do you get the same proplem on modern games?

You know - I haven't actually been playing any very modern games on PC.

I've been meaning to try something newer, as well as benchmark software. It's just I've got so many other things going wrong with my PC, I thought there must be some connection to them all.

But I will get to testing out a new game and 3DMark 06.
 
I think the best thing would be, if possible, to install something you know workes with Vista (any of the Games for Windows) and check that. If that works brilliantly (as you spec is very good) then that at least means you system is fine.

I have COD2, though yet to try it, and will try this later and report back my findings. One thing to try is lowering the resolution and seeing if that makes any odds.

Will do, and thanks for offering to actively help! :)

Turning down various graphics options did help, especially AA and shadows. I just felt that this game should handle high settings no problems. And even with many settings turned down, performance was still less than perfect.

Winter Assault couldn't even handle 1280x1024 with 2XAA at a solid 60FPS.
 
I've got Vista 64 but I went back to XP 32, imo vista 64 just isn't supported enough yet. Its probably fine if your technically wise, which I'm not, which is why I like ATI cards ;)

Well, unless I can find another solution soon I'm going to try the same thing. I prefer Vista, and appreciate 64 bit for the extra RAM.

But if I can get everything running smooth in a 1-job XP install, then that would be much better for me. I value days of my spare time higher than the benefits of the latest OS.

But as for ATi versus nVidia - I've found that neither offer trouble-free hardware solutions. ;)
 
The thing with vista (imo) is every driver has to be update and perfect and installed properly. The hardware has to support it

One thing i also remeber causing a problems is xfire, ( if you use it) it used to cause me lag in games and for age i couldn't work out what it was.


I have a simlair system to yours i will install cod 2 now and give it a try
 
The naysayers in here talking about Vista64 like its the devil are the types that make me laugh, I installed Vista64 without a second thought, slapped in any drivers I could find and everything worked from the off. If Vista64 isn't working for you its something you haven't done not the OS. Also those games are ancient, try running them in compatibility mode with XP SP2 or something.

I don't have xfire installed, so it's not that.

Would really appreciate it if you could try CoD 2 and show me your results. :)

Well, there's definitely some truth in it. Whilst everything may work, XP (x86) is a lot less resource intensive and more generally more compatible with software.

A Vista 64 setup with 8GB and a 4 Gghz quad core still doesn't perform as well as a P4 2.6 Ghz with 512MB of RAM for general Windows usage, from my own experience.

For the latest games, it may well be fine, but for other things the older system does have its advantages.

Now I'm not saying that Vista 64 is the route of all my issues, but I've little doubt it's effecting some of them.

As for me missing something in the installation, I find that highly unlikely. I've got bags of experience in OS installations and can't imagine I missed anything significant. If you feel that there is something specific that I have missed though, it would be helpful to hear what you think it is. :)
