ok,

what has gone wrong if when you poor water in for the first time, loads of foam is produced? loads of white foam in the tubes?

Did you just start it and let it keep running? Doing so will just suck air through the loop and give you foam.

The best way is to start it and then stop as soon as the res is emptied. Top it up and repeat. Can take a good few attempts to get the hang of it.

And, if you can, turn down the speed of the pump.

As Cob recommends , good advice.

Also leave the reservoir open ( not so its dangerous ) , or slightly open to let air out ( bubbles will always find there way to the res eventually )

Can take days to settle sometimes , foam ( tiny air bubbles ) is no need to worry.

Another good way of getting rid of the bubbles is to fill up a basin with whatever fluid you have in the loop and open your loop somewhere. I submerged my waterblock and took the 2 ends of the tubing off. One end will blow out bubble filled liquid while the other draws in bubble free liquid. Works well. Or you could just let the res do it! :p
