i've borrowed a friend my netgear dg632 and hes managed to connect to the internet and xbox live but we can't private chat, join each others games or anything but other people can join his games and chat to him, is it anything to do with my old ip or something being on the modem?

Might be an idea to ask this in networking. I notice a lot of LIVE issues don't get answered when asked in here.

I'll try there if i don't get any help here, he just checked his network settings, his ip address is different but gatway and primary dns server are the same, is it ment to be the same?also we're both with aol

I know :p i really need to look into getting a new bb provider, i'm paying for platinum but getting 2mb

i think i remember changing my ip by doing something in 'run...' maybe that might help? :(

EDIT: DMZ? :o

Demilitarised Zone Its in the router settings. Basically it puts an IP address on your network ouside the firewall pertection and all non-authorised traffic get sent that way. As the xboxes are cloesd systems nothing bad can happen to them.

tried again and we still can't go in each others servers but we can join someone elses and it works fine

AOL platinum is hands down the best broadband service i have used or come across.

The stigma from their dial-up days masks a fine service.

Well i've been with them for 8/9 years now, since the dial up, and since i have went with broadband i have had 1 day's downtime in about 3 years which i think is rather good, cos i know i have had a whole load more downtime like that on all my BT lines in work.
So i dont think the problem lies with AOL. A DMZ is probably the best option, give your xbox a static ip address in the network settings, the in the settings for the router, put in the ip address you just gave the xbox, probably something like 192.168.1.25 would probably be a safe bet to put in the xbox, assuming the netgear is pretty much factory defaults.
and if you are having problems it might be his connection? is it only when one of you host a game?

yeah it's only when we try to join each others game, i think its due to NAT as it's strict, or it is on mine anyway, i'll ask him to check his later. i'll try changing the ip address now

EDIT:just entered the ip address your recomended and i can't get on xbox live but i can get on aol
