Hi,
I have a problem in that XP wont detect my camera when I plaug it in the USB...I used to get the wizard appear and ask what I wanted to do but not any more.It also wont detect any USB flash drives.
They show up in control panel under portable media devices and even in the Hardware devices.
is there anyway I can get the wizard to show again...thanks.

Open Windows Explorer when the camera is plugged in and right click on the camera icon as it were and choose the Properties option, at the bottom of the menu. You should see a menu load up with several tabs. Choose the Autoplay tab and you should see that it has an option set to it, most likely: Do Nothing. What you need to do is select the radio button at the bottom of the Autoplay menu, "Prompt me each time to choose an option"

That should fix the problem for you, when you next plug the camera in you should get a window popping up asking you what to do. As the window is context sensitive to the device, the Scanner and Camera wizard should be one of them. Hope this helps.

thanks for the reply.
I have just tried that and when I click properties the menu that shows up is like a shortcut menu (if that makes sense)

thanks

Hmm so no Advanced Options anywhere then? Strange. I can only suggest uninstalling the camera from the PC. So any software and settings you can find relating to the camera. Maybe also go into the Registry if you feel confident about that and sweep up any entries to do with the camera that weren't removed by the uninstalls.

If you don't feel confident doing that, get CCleaner and run the registry clean up tool or Tune Up Utils 2006 to find the errant entries.

aye its a bit of a strange one...I looked in disk management in admin tools and the camera is listed in the drives section.I clicked properties on it there and found the autoplay option. It was set to prompt me each time.I have tried the other options but still no joy.

Thing is though it doesnt just happen with the camera...it happens with pendrives too

Thanks for the advice though :)

Yeah I reckon it is to do with removable devices (portable media devices) such as pen drives and cameras, which have memory cards in them. I'm trying to think of how to reset Window's portable media devices setting.

It could also be the windows USB drivers. I have had a lot of problems with them and my USB devices, which were solved my installing SP2.

(If) you do, then make sure windows knows to use the latest drivers, you have to manually upgrade them yourself. I think they're called usbhub2.sys or something of similar name...
