I have a laptop that needed a format, trouble is I don't have the original version of XP Home to reinstall back on it.

I have a 2002 version of XP Home that I used but then when I attempted to enter the key tied to the laptop it didn't work. I know this is due to the fact the version of XP I have on disk is not tied to the key that is tied to the laptop, if you know what I mean, different versions.

So I thought I'd just install it with the key that came with the version of XP I have and try and swap the keys round afterwards.

Is this possible and if so, how do I do it?

Any help would be much appreciated :)

I'm not asking for anything illegal, I'm just trying to figure out how to do it without having to go to the trouble of contacting the manufacturer for the proper disk.

The versions of XP I have are all legal.

I don't want to download anything, I'm just hoping that there's a way to change my product key to the right one.

You can change the product key in Vista so I'm sure it's possible in XP.

If an admin wants to lock it and slap my wrists then feel free, I didn't think I was breaking any rules.

i have done it before after changing the key and a reboot windows complains that the key is incorrect or something similar.anyway you can change the key using Magical Jelly Bean ver 1.51.think the new release does not allow you to change the keys.

Well I've tried a few various things but nothing seems to be working - Magic Jelly Bean wouldn't work, same with the facility within the XP activation process.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to but it looks like I need to get the specific version of XP Home from the manufacturer, which, reluctantly, I will phone tomorrow, unless anybody has any ideas in the meantime.

Thanks to those who tried to help.
