A friend of mine seems to have been infected with the trojan "XP Police Antivirus". She is running AVG which is up to date so not sure how it got in but anyway, we need to get rid of it. Anyone got any fixes?

I'm going to recommend she use Avast going forward cos i have been happily using that for a couple of yrs now. Other thing i could suggest is CCleaner but if anyone knows how specifically to remove this Carp, plz post!

TIA

Try Ad-Aware aswell. Brilliant software and has got rid of many things that have got past my antivirus(norton at the time) Never had any problem now ive moved to Eset Nod32 Internet Security. Hope that helps

Malwarebytes and Superantispyware are the best current anti-spyware apps. I'm afraid the likes of Spybot and Adaware have been left in the traps.

AVG has been stuck in the traps for ages too - get Avira or even Avast AV installed instead.

None of the above will help unless you first tell her to Turn Off system restore ;)

So,

Turn Off system restore & Reboot.
Run Ad aware SE FULL scan & delete all it finds.
Run Super antispyware free edition FULL scan & delete all it finds.
Run Avast & delete all it finds.
Reboot.
Run Ad aware SE QUICK scan & delete all it finds.
Run Super antispyware free edition QUICK scan & delete all it finds.
Turn On system restore.
Reboot.
Happy computer.

As above, followed by installing NOD32 :D

Oh and resetting IE security settings is also a good idea.

I forgot something but now I have forgotten what it was I forgot  + :o
Hoping this will remind me, Hang on.

O Yer make sure you tell her to Scan all the progs after she downloads them & then once installed Updates them all before she runs/uses them.

Woohooo got there in the end.

Yes... Make sure you delete all the registry files!!!

See my post above and under XP Police Antivirus Manual Removal Instructions Do step 2. making sure you copy everything in the scroll box for the registry keys including Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Also use malwarebytes anti malware instead of super spyware, iv found it easier to use and more effective. Make sure you update it before you use it though!

hope this helps

Reboot

Step 2. Download http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and update it. Also update AVG.

Step 3. Remove it

Do this http://www.enigmasoftware.com/suppor...virus-removal/ from XP Police Antivirus Manual Removal Instructions.

Step 4. Boot up in safe mode and then run a full scan with both AVG and Malwarebytes to make sure everything has been deleted.

I know I have run the scans last but this is just the finite way of checking step 3.

this is exactly what I did and it worked fine first time.

P.S Leave system restore turned off and just get acronis for free and create yourself a good image to restore too :)
