I posted a varient of this on the CPU board and I'm not sure where this belongs but....

I have £275 max budget.

I also have a Radeon 9800XT 256 GFX which I want to keep as I can't afford a new one.

I have broken P4 3.2 (Socket 478)

I need a new system.

I would like it to be 64bit but don't need it to be.

I can't find any 478 CPU's on OCUK but I don't really like shopping from anywhere else on the internet (bar amazon!!). So I need a Socket 774-5 or 939 system.

I do need it to be easily upgradable in 6-8months. i.e. motherboard that will be able to take top of line CPU's then.

I have no idea what to do.

Help. Please...

I assume you only need mobo & CPU!

THen ASRock 939Dual-SATA2: With AGP and PCIe. approx £43 (other etailers, not from OcUK)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - OEM (CP-152-AM) £193.82

True with the OEM, you dont get cooler so get this ...

Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940) (FG-000-AR)
The low speed 92 mm fan reduces the noise level to a minimum.
Price: £17.04 Including VAT
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Considering :

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - OEM (CP-152-AM) £193.82

plus

Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940) (FG-000-AR) £17.04

Total : £210.86

or

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA3800BVBOX) (CP-134-AM) £214.97

Its cheaper to get OEM CPU & a better cooler than the retail CPU (they do come with a standard cooler).

I was always going to get a OEM CPU the retail ones are poor at best.

I was going to get the Zalman as I have liked them in the past, is it worth the extra £10 to get the Zalman rather than the Artic Freezer 64?
