I've been getting high CPU temps (80 C) so I decided to take the CPU heatsink off and apply some new thermal compound (after cleaning the old stuff off with alcohol wipes). After putting it all back together the machine will not boot. It checks devices on the IDE bus (DVD, CD-RW, HDD etc), but does not post or appear to give a video signal. There are no beeps. The fans spin up.

I was very careful when doing the work, so can't understand what's wrong.

Any idea's ?

Have you tried reseating the GPU? Go through all the devices and double check the cables and molex are connected, also try resetting CMOS.

Thanks, have reseated GPU, memory and CPU. Not reset the CMOS, will try that now.

Check the connections to all the drives, both power and data connections. I've seen a PC that would not post because of a slightly loose cable there.

Well, I can confirm that I'm a complete muppet! I took the memory out when I was putting the heat sink back on so that I didn't damage it. I put the memory back in, but didn't seat it correctly, only just noticed on one last final check ! I guess that means I won't be getting a new PC just yet ! Sort of a shame as I'm running an Athlon XP2400+ with 512MB ram ! Still some persuading to do with the missus then !

and finally, after a long stressful day, my CPU temp undrr load has dropped from 80 C to 58 C. Not bad for a bit of compound !

Might actually get round to trying a bit of OC'ing !

Going over 60 under load isn't adviced, it starts getting too hot around 60 and you may do some damage.

Maybe you can get a aftermarket cooler like a Noctua/Tuniq, they are godly compared with the stock things.

30 quid for some motherboard off eBay, twist my arm and I'll send you an opteron 146 for postage costs plus a couple of pints, there's your upgrade :)

Thanks for your kindness ! I'm going to build from scratch in a few months, got some share options coming !
