I have just built my new pc with a q6600 slacr,asus maximus formula board,ocz 6400 reaper ram,620psu,320 gb hd,8400 gfx,antec 900 case

The problem i'm having is that when i launch the AI overclocking utility it says that the cpu is only running at about 1.6 ghz so i downloaded CPUID and that says the same, the reason is that the multiplier is kept at 6 with a fsb of 266 not 9x266 as it sould be, i checked the bios and its set to 9 there so is the mobo holding it back for some reason?.Im realitively new to ocing so any help and/or settings would be soooooo helpfull plus has anybody had any experience with this mobo/cpu combo ???

Don't you have to disable stepping or something like that in the BIOS?

thats correct. Its running with power saving settings (speedstep). If you run superPI or something you will see your true clock in cpu-z. You can turn it off in bios

There are so many 'speedstep' threads. I think someone should create and sticky a thread along the lines of "Is your Intel Core 2 duo/quad clock speed or multiplier lower than it should be?" with a small explaination of speedstep and how to disable it and its pros and cons.

Another one to check is if your running Vista check the power options in control panel as somtimes this is set to balanced, change this to high performance.

speedstep

so you think thats the prob? what will it be under in bios and will this affect my ram as i checked the timings, the board sets them to 5-5-5-15 but when i looked on the packet the ram came in it was 4-3-4-15 so i reset the timings and it froze with the post indicator sayind dram something so i had to clear cmos to get it to boot

I doubt speedstep will affect your RAM as this I think realy only works in windows to save power when idle.

To disable this you need to look for C1E and or EIST in the BIOS and disable.

In regards your RAM does the package say a recommended voltage my Geil Ram recommends 2.1v, perhaps try 4-4-4-15.

sorted

Thanks for the help found the C1E setting in bios and disabled it booted up and hey presto 2.4mhz @9x266 so had a little play with the onboard oc software 10 mins later 3.0mhz @9x320 running great. As for the ram talked to overclockers and there is some compatability issues between OCZ ram and ASUS boards so am gonna return it and get the crucial ballistix 2x1gb 8500 what they recommend, is there any difference between the tracer kit and the normal gold one?

happy now

got the new ram in well chuffed messed about a little bit with the onboard oc stuff hey presto 3.5 mgz @388x9 at 1.39vcore .What program can you use to tell the ram speed accurately
