I think one of my hard drives is failing! Basically there is a weird clicky noise coming out of my pc, i turned some of my fans off to check it wasn't them, but the clicky noise continued, i can't turn off the other fans though without my pc blowing up. Is there a safe way to turn on and off a hard drive while the pc is in use? I have 2 hdds, so it would be nice to turn one of at a time. I'll be quite annoyed if its my newish 500gig drive thats gone!

I'm hoping it is the psu! Its a Hiper type-r something or other, i believe they are prone to exploding or something! Ive had it for like 1-2 years.

No, nothing backed up! Thats why i want to turn off individual hdd's to see which one is clicking so i can make the appropriate backups, thats if it is the hdd.

It's not always making a clicky noise though, atm it isn't but it probably will soon.

Also, i hear fan speed changing, goes high then low etc It could possibly be my aeroflower. I don't want to be buying a new psu though if its my hdd! I might just have to disconnect the hdd's then use a live disk of linux or something. I'll see lol

Sorry if im rambling a bit, i feel rather drunk, although i haven't been drinking, im just ill!

Hiper PSUs are quite dire from what I can gather so that could do with being replaced when you have the chance anyway.

In regards to back ups - if you have anything critical on them you should be backing them up anyway.

A simple way to check is disconnect the hard drive which does not have the operating system on it and then see if the clicking returns - this way you will know which one it is.

As for it not happening all the time, does it happen only after a period of time? It could be as a result of overheating causing the bearings to expand and catch.

This is miles from my area of expertise so the above could be a load of rubbish but hopefully it will help.

i think i will go with my idea of unplugging them one at a time when i can be bothred ! My pc has been on for 3 days now and it only started about yesterday afternoon. My psu has been good for 1-2 years, so it will be a shame for it to pack up! Any good psu's out there, preferably silent/quiet ones!

Had a thorough look at my pc, turns out it is the fan on the back of my psu! I took the guard off to try and clear a bit of dust out but i had no luck no-luck. I might see if i can go about replacing the fan at the weekend, but if it looks like too much hassle, i.e the fan is directly soldered to the circuit board, then I'll have a look at my warranty. The psu box says 3 years, but it might be more cost effective to get a new psu! Also means my pc won't have downtime.
