Hi guys, I need to know which would be more beneficial to a gamer

Zotac 9800GTX+ 512mb
or
XFX HD4850 512mb

We're talking high resolution gaming on games such as GTA 4, CSS, and probably some newer titles later on in the year.

I'm building a PC for a friend and he has these as a current spec, but doesn't know what graphics card to get(and his budget is limited to £120)

AMD Athlon 6000+
Gigabyte MA78G
2GB Corsair XMS2 800mhz
OCZ GameXtream 700w
HIS Radeon X1650PRO IceQ

Which would be more beneficial to his system? I was thinking ATi as he's running a crossfire mobo and apparently ATi work best with AMD Processors, this is only what I've been told, so I'm not going to outright back that up.

CSS is a cpu limited game though of course your friend will still see a nice boost with a new video card. I would say there isn't a lot between the two, I probably go for the ATI since 'I think' it will handle the higher settings like AA better etc. Mind you I'm biased in that I'd be inclined to go for any board but an XFX, only my experience though. The 4850 kicks out quite a lot of heat which is ok, there are designed to handle it, but the XFX cards don't exactly help in that respect either.

dunno why they tell you that ATI cards work best with AMD processors.. but I really don't think thats true. I have an Intel E6420 along with my HD 4850 and it runs pretty damn well.
But anyways, kylew is right, HD 4850 takes very little performance hit from AA and AF unlike Nvidia based cards.

I've had both the 8800GT and HD 4850.

Oh, and I goes from 120-300fps on CSS on a 40 man server, so you shouldn't worry about CSS too much. Its really just not that demanding enough for the graphics card, and you won't notice the difference between 100fps and 300fps.

It's just all marketing talk. They say it works best because they build them both and in theory optimize each to work with the other.

In reality though, I don't think it makes any difference at all.

Both are around the same performance, but id have got the 9800 GTX, as it will wallop the 4850 in GTA, as GTA runs much better on Nvidia cards.
