Hey,

I have a pc which I am going to format but I first need back up any data on it. I plugged my mini HDD into it using a different cable than usual as I ahve left it somewhere and won;t get it back until next friday and it is not being detected. A flash drive is not large enough and would take me several hundred trips to transfer all data. And do not wish to use a cd or dvd. The only way to access the data on the drive currently is to use the Mini XP mode on Hirens Boot CD. I know I shouldn't really be speaking about that disk on here but this is urgent and I really could do with some help getting this to work. I have connected a network cable from the MiniXP system to our router and then my pc to the router is a wireless connection. I opened the "PE Network Manager" app on the MiniXP system and set it to our normal workgroup. It has been given an IP address whcih is all good but when I go on my system and view network devices. It shows my own system, my mums laptop and my netbook but not the MiniXP system.

Any help on how I can get this working so I can transfer the files to my pc threfore I can get it formatted and sorted out for this client?

Thanks

Regards,
Neil

Right, MiniXP seems to be appearing in my network places list now.

I clicked it and it is now asking for a network password. I entered the credentials I set on MiniXP and it is not taking those. I also tried using my own pc's logon credentials and none are working?

The box that is appearing asking for credentials is asking for a username and password and then underneath it says: "Domain: NEIL-PC"

What does this mean. The "PE Network Management" tool on MiniXP asks me to set up a username and a password for sharing so I set username as "Administrator" and a simple password but when I type those in when trying to connect, It just fails!

any help here?

Do you just want to take a full backup of the drive to another computer or only selected files?

For a complete backup, I used Acronis True Image 2010's boot cd the other day to backup a laptop onto another networked PC fairly effortlessly. Clonezilla should also do it, but Acronis will be easier to use I'm sure.

Also you should be using a cable for this, not wireless.

I only want to transfer a few folders of data. As stated above, it is showing up now but just having trouble with credentials. Also I don;t have Acronis but do want to do it this network way like i'm trying to. Mainly for learning!

Another option is to set-up an FTP server on the machine you want to transfer to, and then connect to that from XP.

Quick 'n Easy FTP Server is fine for this kind of thing as it doesn't need installing. Once you've ran it you have to enable the server as it's turned off as default, I think it's the top left button.

Here's how to connect to the server with XP: http://www.lanoie.com/support/howto/ftp_xp.php replace 'www.mysite.com' with the ip address of your computer with the FTP server on.

ok, I'll give the FTP a go now but Please could you or someone else at least try and help with getting my original idea to work.

Right, Not tried the FTP yet as I want to get it working the original way first. Some pics to help explain my issues:

Page 1 of the config on MINIXP. I ahve set up the credentials and set a password:

Page 2 of the MINIXP network setup shows that it's set to the correct workgroup:

The image below now shows that MiniXP is showing in the network folder in the background and this is what appears on the screen when I double click minixp:

so I type in "Administrator" and the password I set up for it and the following box appears which is where I am stuck:

Any help would be highly appreciated!

Sorry got delayed!

On MiniXP have you shared any folders for that user? Try this:

  1. Create a folder on the c:\ drive, i.e. c:\temp\
  2. Right click on c:\temp and go to properties > sharing
  3. Select 'share this folder'
  4. Click permissions and give 'everyone' full control.

Alternatively share a folder on the PC you want to backup to and connect to that FROM the MiniXP computer?

Right. I have tried that and I ahve set the full c drive of mini xp to be shared.

It't the credentials problem that needs sorting. Check the pictures above. Please exaplain to me what the 3rd and 4th pictures are asking for and what I should enter in eahc. I do not understand what it wants of me?

Also MiniXP is a very cut down version of windows so I do not have access to most of it which is why this PE Network tool has been put in in place so I ahve tried mapping a shared folder on my own pc to a drive on MiniXP and i just get "Unknown Error While Mapping Drive"

Personally I'd just use a Linux boot CD as most will access NTFS (windows) partitions anyway rather than having to use a stripped down version of XP.

Have you tried using a username/password different to administrator?

ok. I'll download a linux live cd now. How do I configure sharing a folder in linux as I ahve hardly used linux. I'll download a live cd of Debian

From that screenshot it's using the Administrator credential of Neil-PC not of MiniXP.

In the username field put it \\MiniXP\Administrator then your password. I think that might be of use. :)

You don't need a massive distro like debian to do this, something tailored to recovery will be fine. I've never used it, but SystemRescueCd looks pretty good. But it might be a pain to configure it to allow windows to connect to it (rather than have it connect to Windows over the network).

The FTP solution would be far easier though :p.

On the machine with the FTP server? Did you share a folder you have full permissions to, i.e. one on your desktop?

I have set the server up on the minixp machine and told it to share the entire c drive and gave the user I created full read and change rights, then tried to add a new network location in "Computer" on my own system and it asks for the username in the wizard but when attempting to connect I get this error!

ALL I WANT TO DO IS TRANSFER SOME FILES!!!!!!!

Set the FTP server up on your computer, and share a folder on your desktop say (if you're using Vista UAC will likely prevent you from writing to the c:\ drive directly). Connect to the server using MiniXP and transfer files from MiniXP to your computer.

If you can install programs on MiniXP I recommend Filezilla to connect to your FTP server rather than the built in windows one.

It should be MiniXP\Administrator

\\MiniXP is the network location, not the domain.

Just tried the above and pressed enter and it took a little wait for it to think and then a log on box appeared with MiniXP\Administrator in it showing up but it will not accept any password I enter into it!
