Do I pre-order Fallout New Vegas off Steam within the next week days while the offer is on, or do I wait and pre-order it elsewhere?

Am I do understand that you cant mod the steam versions?
Are the pre-order items exclusive to steam?

HELP! xD

There are four different pre order bonus packs,

From GameStop: The Classic Pack, my personal favorite, featuring an armored Vault 13 suit, a Vault 13 canteen, a weathered 10mm pistol with some added punch and five stimpacks.

From Amazon: The Tribal Pack, which includes tribal raiding armor, a high-damage broad machete, five doses of "bleak venom," whatever that is, and ten throwing spears.

From Walmart and Steam: The Caravan Pack, a practical collection that comes with lightweight leather armor, a "sturdy caravan shotgun," four repair kits and a handy-dandy set of binoculars.

From Best Buy: The Mercenary Pack, with lightweight metal armor, a fast-loading mercenary grenade rifle, three "super stimpacks" and three doctors' bags.

Haven't looked into what UK retailers are offering yet, I assume Amazon uk will have the Tribal Pack although there's no details of it on the site.

As for modding, you should be able to, Steam installs game files like any normal installation, it just puts the files in a different folder to usual. You can mod Medieval Total War 2, for example, when it's been bought and installed on Steam, but you have to control when it updates the game to ensure compatibility with older mods.

I usually go for the cheapest retailer and for a change Steam's price is competitive. Although if a UK retailer offers the 'Mercenary Pack' that Best Buy offers I will get that. Can't say no to a fast loading grenade rifle surely? However the machete, drugs and spears from the Tribal pack is also interesting :)

edit: Also just read that FO:NV will be using Steam rather than the Games for Windows Live service. One initial online activation then you can throw away the dvd.

Also to confirm the mods -

Gamers worried about making and using mods can also relax. "This will have no affect on mod development whatsoever," he added. "Modders will still be able to create and distribute their plugins the same way they have in the past."

Oh god not another one of these ****ing annoying releases where you get different stuff depending on where you order. The only bright spot is they'll probably all be available on torrent sites before the weekend.

Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3 were all eventually opened up to allow the Script Extender to work as even though you could mod the game, anything that required the script extender wouldn't work as it originally would've required the makers to decrypt the steam files (which was obviously illegal).
Since FO:NV is done by Obsidian not Bethesda it depends on how they do things.

Yeah these pre order packs are pretty annoying, and like you say pretty insignificant when a moddder can come along and put the same gear into the game a week or so after release.

It's nice to have the game on steam , no looking for the disks / automatic updates. I only buy on steam unless there is a good price elsewhere.

Can anyone confirm that the game is definately a steam works game (i don't know if i'm using the correct phrase here, i mean you add it to steam and have it on steam thereafter).

If so i'm sure itll be cheaper somewhere online :)

I imagine you'll get the relevant pre order pack whichever way you buy it from the shop that has the pack on offer, physical copy or download. It'll probably just be a code you put into Steam after all.

Bethesda will be announcing details of the official EU suppliers and which packs they'll offer soon. No rush to decide now, still got several months until release.

When you say its using Steam instead of GFWL, I assume that means no points, and the fact that every copy no matter where bought from will need a steam account and run through steam interface?
(Sorry if that seems like a stupid question :p)

It seems not!

Anyway, if you buy on disk, do you still get the pre-order pack depending on where you purchased it from or is it only avaliable on digital downloads?

Oh i'm sorry i thought that answer was frigging obvious given that i'm yet to hear of Walmart doing a digital distribution platform. The thread was answered in the first post, everything else was adding to it. Maybe OPs no longer apply common sense to thread replies any more?

There are several months until October with a certain lack of details that will get filled in over time. You're acting like it goes live tonight. No-one is making you pre-order it now.

Oh and since letmegooglethatforyou links are blocked.

I think the answer is quite clear... the game requires Steam to run as it uses Steamworks (how that will work with this game i have no idea, i only hope Obsidian don't use the god-awful save system Bethesda do) so almost certainly any copy will be added to a Steam account.
