ok, so got a dell pc here, it has NO ps2 sockets only usb. thing is, when windows loads up, it detects the usb keyboard and mouse, but wants me to select next, which obviously i cannot as it has not installed the keyboard or mouse yet. any ideas?

With usb mouse and keyboard drivers should install automatically, sometimes it just takes a minute. What i find sometimes helps is to keep pressing the num lock key until the light comes up then you know it is working. Also keep moving the mouse left and right. seriously. Don't know if it makes a difference. Also taking them out and putting them in to another usb socket while it is on the login screen.

yeh i have tried that, and i have tried several different keyboards and mice, but still the same, it wants me to confirm that i want to install the keyboard and mouse, really annoying.
even tried safemode, but still the same. it works in the bios (most of the time) and it works if i boot off a cd, just as soon as windows loads it wants to install them and needs user input to continue. why dell didnt just stick ps2 sockets on their computers.

Is there a USB legacy option in the BIOS? Usually is on Dells which should help with this, alternatively power off the PC and try the keyboard in another port at the back of the computer (rear ports have more power usually), power on and see how you get on.

i have checked it was enabled in the bios and made sure no other settings were incorrect. i have also used 3 different keyboards and mice in all the front and rear usb ports and still the same, it wants user confirmation before installing the drivers.
i have acronis cloned the drive, so tomorrow i will do a full windows repair from the xp cd and hopefully whilst its detecting the devices it will install the keyboard and mouse then. if not, fresh install i guess.
