Its definitely the correct fittings, as I have the 10/13 fittings and my new ones are much bigger.
 
Did you try holding the tubing and turning the compression? As opposed to holding the block/pump/whatever and turning the compression. I found with my fittings (Monsoon ones) I had to do that, otherwise if I turned the compression, it acted like a spring and just turned back after I let go. What you want is for the tube to stay still and the compression to turn, so holding the tube made sense...
