So I have upgraded the PC, new case, r9 390, ssd but I cannot get the damn thing working and I think the issue may be due to dvi-d.

When powered up the fans, mouse and gfx light work. The keyboard doesn't light up and the monitor does not display due to 'no signal'. At this point I'm using a dvi d cable and then a HDMI cable but neither connection works.

I have checked all the connections, reseated the gfx (which is difficult to do as the thumb screws are hard to line up with the case holes).

I've removed the gfx and connected with a VGA (??) Cable and it works, but if I use the dvi d cable it will not.

Can anyone offer any suggestions as what I should try next?

I've had a look at the monitor manual and it says that the monitor end of the dvi-d cable should not have a ferrite filter whereas the PC end should. My cable has filters both ends which may be the problem?

I've tested a HDMI on the monitor using my DVD player and it worked, but through the gfx card it still doesn't work.

I have an ocz 850w gold PSU with the correct 6 + 2 connectors.

Right I've taken the whole thing to pieces and set up on a table.

For some reason the monitor I'm using has stopped working so I've had to bring out the old one.

The system boots from the motherboard and from the old 570 gtx using a an RGB and the RGB with an adaptor respectively.

The 390 does not load with the old monitor.

The MB is a MSI z68a g43 g3. Also the 390 has come with a weird 6 to 8 pin adaptor which I'm going to try and see if it works.

The 6 to 8 pin didn't work.

Would installing the 390 drivers make the card initialise?

Resolution Update

So I exhausted the testing methods listed above and identified that the R9 390 was the issue.

I removed the 390 and a formatted / full install of Windows 10 and I also updated the bios (scary).

At this point the 390 still did not display. I removed the card and rebooted. In the meantime Windows 10 identified the 390 and downloaded/installed the drivers 390 and viola - the 390 now works through DVI-D and HDMI.

I'd never have thought that the drivers needed to be installed separately but there you go!!
