So i wanted to re-install windows tonight and wipe my pc to nothing. By accident i put in my windows vista disc into a windows xp pc reinstalled windows and now i cannot log into my pc as i need the new cd key for vista. I have now got the windows xp disc but cannot seem to load it in any way at login. How can i load the disc so i can remove windows vista and put xp back ?

You need to boot from the Windows XP disk, you may need to change settings in the BIOS to search for a bootable CD before it looks for the HDD.

You need to boot from it...

If you don't get prompted to boot from CD after the POST screen, you may need to change the boot order in the BIOS.

EDIT: Damnit - got ninja'd!

ok had a mare ! done all that got into windows cannot change from windows vista to xp as its an older verison.. tried system restore dont work any other suggestions ?

OK you're going to have to slow down and be more specific.

Did you manage to get into the Windows XP Setup?

If Yes, what exact steps did you take to try and install XP?

At a guess, it sounds like you tried to upgrade rather than do a clean install of XP. But until you answer the two questions above I can't say for sure.

yeah got into it, I tried to install XP and it wont let me becasue i have vista.

Microsoft wont let you go from a newer version to an older one.

I did try clean install but i used the vista disk instead of the XP disc.. stupid mistake

Yeah you can't upgrade an installation from new -> old

You can do a clean install with the XP disk though.

When you boot from the XP CD it will give you the option to format and reinstall windows. You need to delete the existing partition with your current data on and do a clean install.

Please please please make sure you have any and all data you want to keep backed up before you nuke it lol. I assume you have since youve already reinstalled once - but no harm in making sure! :)
