got two decent sized windows that face roughly south (although one is overshadowed for a part of the day) want to plant some window boxes but would like to do some herbage for cooking, anyone know what's easy, fairly hard wearing and gives off nice smells/looks good?

Think more about what you'll actually use most.

I cannot live without sage and basil, while the Mrs insists on rosemary, mint, parsley and three different kinds of thyme. There's some others in there, but I can't even remember what they are!

As above, try what you use the most.

For us we always have a couple of thyme on the go (including lemon thyme - brilliant with chicken) as well as rosemary and parsley. We are using much more parsley than we did so going to try a few varieties this year to see which is best.

Going to do mint again and try basil but for some reason I don't have much luck with it. If you do mint I would probably pot it in a pot that will fit in your window box as it takes over everything.

Bay is nice if you have a patio or balcony and is great for so many things. Just make sure it's the laurus nobilis you get which is the one for cooking. Often they do nice ones at B&Q for ~£20 this time of the year which is a bargain.
