Hello Overclockers.
I've decided to spent a bit of cash on a PowerMac G5. Here are the specs....

Dual 1.8ghz PowerPC Processors
1gb RAM
500GB HDD
5200 GFX (64mb)
Mac OS X 10.4.11

I've had a lot of Macs in the past, maily older versions. (Although I did have a PowerBook g4 Titanium when it first came out).

I wanted to know what type/quantity RAM I need to install in this for Leopard to run smoothly with no-hickups.

and was this a wise choice for someone who wants to use his mac for 'occasional' use.

Welcome,

Sorry, but how much have you actually spent on buying the PowerMac G5? Would it not have been wiser to buy a Mac Mini if its only for occasional use?

I spent £189, thats without postage and packaging.

I looked at the Mini's but I decided against them, cant upgrade them at all.

Ah ok, thats a good price :)

Also, you can upgrade Mac Mini's hard drive and memory. You just need a butter knife to open the case around the bottom :)

I think it's a wise choice for the price you paid.

not a bad rig for the money, i used to have the dual 2Ghz model windtunnel eat ya heart out haha

what are you planning on using it for,

Dual 1.8ghz PowerPC Processors , not good for media, it will just about play 720P video, 1080P wont play at all
1gb RAM this is embarrassing, i had 5Gb DDR in mine, and you should have at least 4 in yours, it really will help it move :)
Mac OS X 10.4.11

as for ram type, hit the apple logo top left corner and click ' about this mac' it will state what make ram it needs, pretty sure it's DDR, only the late watercooled G5's used DDR2 :)

The problem is it's so obsolete now it's not even funny, but for occasional use and a bit of a tinker toy it will be a nice little computer.

It's a nice bit of iron but a bit risky IMO. It's over 5 years old at the best, 7+ years at worst.

A secondhand 2009 Mac Mini would have been a better purchase and significantly quicker.

Agree, while congrats for grabbing a Mac, that £189 would have been better going towards a newer Mac :)

But you'll have fun with it :)
