If you want a cheapish runabout, a small petrol supermini is the way to go, especially if you have another car to use for longer journeys. Citreon C1, Toyota aygo etc. You'll get diesel style economy without the purchasing costs and cheaper fuel.

As much as it pains me to chuck fuel into my car at stupid prices, i'm not willing to drive around in some 1ltr pos with no toys just to save a few quid.

On the run to work i get around 28 - 30mpg, i used to get 40mpg out of my 1.2 clio.

For me its not worth the cost of running a second car to save 10mpg.
 
'those few quid' however add up after each of the 'its-only-2p-more' rises... and soon account to hundreds, just to friggin get from A to B.

i for one cannot wait for the next election.
 
A further increase in fuel duty of 1.84p is due in April 2009.

This infuriates me!!! :mad: I just want to get to work....to earn money (and be taxed) and then pay off my car tax/road taxes and have some moneys left to buy food and goodies, but the government is milking the motorists as a source of income to only go and chuck £800million to a foreign country!?

indeed, it is only 2/4p, which is nothing, but when you are already spending over £300 a month on petrol (like i am), it adds up.
Hence why i am looking at diesels at the moment :]

Just done the calcs, to do my 27miles each way trip to work, 5 days of the week 40 weeks of the year costs me £575 more in a car that does 29mpg instead of 40mpg.

Now, tax on a cheaper older car would be £140 a year, £54mot, £400 insurance, then the purchase price of the car.

Ontop of all that servicing, then you have to suffer with a worse car.

Not worth it ;)

Because we are forever the easy target. We need our cars, you lads will pay stupid amounts get on the road, the rich will pay huge taxes on their X5's and RR's.

I wait for the day the day of the second coming, when a man (or woman, but lets be serious) will stand in parliament and say "Speed doesn’t kill". And drop 20p off duty. :eek:
 
The main issues is this :

Say everyone has gone green, you don't need petrol so the Gov don't get the duty from that, they need the money so who's going to pay.

They can't say the Eco cars are chucking out CO2 so they will just tax us per mile driven, thus proving its money grabbing and has nothing to do with saving the world.

Total joke!
 
They might aswell put the speed limits up at the same time, more people getting worse mpg filling up a lot more, think of the cash.
Eventually, the cost of petrol will be high enough to make taking the bus an attractive/affordable option... :eek:

thats fine and dandy now. but wait 'till it hits 1.50... which it will in time. ;)

true, theyll tax us one way or another, theres no escaping, apart from the airport :p

Well a barrel of oil is on its way down, maybe when it settles even more in the Middle East and some more places get pumping :/

It hit $100 a barrel and went flying over £1 a liter the same day yet it's in the refinery for a few weeks, they didn't give the same courtesy with it going the other way, its still going up around here.

If it goes up to 1.20 from 1.10 then my fuel costs will be £50 more per year.

Can't see it reaching 1.50 anytime soon ;)
