Intel is planning to discontinue a number of Core i7 CPUs almost as soon as it lifts the curtain on Lynnfield on September 1st.
COMPUTEX 2009: According to sources at Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers, Intel is planning to discontinue a number of its Core i7 processors almost as soon as it pulls the covers off its new Lynnfield CPUs on 1st September.

The models include, but are not limited to, the Core i7 920 and Core i7 940, while one source suggested that the as-yet-unreleased Core i7 950 would also probably get the chop a bit later.

Apparently, Lynnfield's performance is so close to the cheaper i7 CPUs that Intel is looking to move the focus of its LGA 1366 socket to just the high-end, workstation and SMP boards using the X58 chipset. It all sounds remarkably similar to what AMD did with the early Athlon 64 FX processors, which used Socket 940 while all other Athlon 64s used Socket 754.

In light of this, motherboard manufacturers have said that they're already working to adjust their X58 product lines to cater for the price range and market future LGA 1366 processors will target.

I'd still buy one.

OMGZ Processor tech outdated after a year!!!

/Hugs i7 Mac Pro.

lso it is completely unconfirmed and seems to be inaccurate. Six core chips are still planned for this socket also to allow an upgrade path.

No it means the will no chips in the lower price bracket on the i7 therefore making u spend a min of £200-£300 for a CPU if yours dies etc. Just there will be no lower speced models i.e the 920

and which socket will get the six core chips first..... think about it the 'premium' I7 or the mainstream 'I5'. I dont doubt the the chips for I7 will remain at £200 plus but thats where the best performing chips that are at the upper end of the scale have been for years....

Info like this always makes me laugh.

Who cares if they're going to stop making them, as, if like me you already have one and it is more than capable for the next 2 years or more then it makes no difference whatsoever.

Lol.

Hang on a minute. Are you saying people who bought the i7 made a bad choice? I7 is (and if I read that corect), will still be at the premium end of CPU's/Motherboards. Personally I think thats a good thing as it makes them more sought after. Sure a new socket/CPU would be nice but there's nothing really that a 65nm quad can't cope with nevermind the core i7 range.

So they are going to discontinue a CPU - as an i7 owner why don't I want to hear this?
It's not as if as soon as it's discontinued my CPU stops working and vanishing.

CPU's are discontinued all the time - not exactly earth shattering news.

To be honest, I see this as a positive thing.

Intel are ditching the low end so they can concentrate on selling the more expensive CPUs.

Are these really going to be much faster than a 3.8-4G 920? Given the rest of the architecture is going to be much the same, I expect not.

They are being heavily discounted right now too, so you can get a good deal while shops try to get rid of their inventories.

So, you won't have the most recent chip, perhaps. But you'll have something just as fast, for MUCH less cashola.

Yeah It does not bother me none. The rumor is that the best i5 may compete with the lower i7 not that they are equal. i7 will still be better and to think I got one before they made the cheapest chip $500 makes me feel glad I did it. In fact all those who ever considered going i7 may do it now before the cheap chips are done away with. I still have tri-channel ddr3, my choice of xfire or sli, and a lightning fast platform that is surely going to rock the socks off of any game/app to come in the next 5 years.

Hang on, so the new processors are gona be worse than the old ones? :S That is bad news for current owners why?

I'm thinking of getting an i7 this or next month.
Correct me if I'm wrong but to me the article seems to say that intel will stop making lower end i7 CPUs to make room for their coming i5 range. Nowhere in that can I see where they say they will stop making chips for socket 1366.
