I've got a Hero 4 Black, which I haven't used yet :p

I have heard from a few people at work and a couple of people I know that the GoPro batteries are crap and there are betters ones made by external companies? My google must be really weak this evening as I cannot seem to find this other battery that they talk about. Anyone got a clue?

And mounts, same as above? I've owned GoPro's in the past and the mounts have always been decent but loads of people say otherwise, I don't agree with them, has anyone had a problem with them failing or anything like that?

There is nothing wrong with the GoPro batteries. You can get slightly higher power ones, but any extra battery life is marginal. A few minutes maybe. The real benefit is that they are quite a bit cheaper than the official ones.

Video comparison here -

As for mounts, I would only use the official ones for any situation where the camera is at risk. The 3rd party ones are probably fine, and again cheaper, but you just never know how well they are manufactured. If it's just for general filming, I will quite happily use 3rd party.

I bought a pair of Smatree batteries and a triple charger from Amazon for the same price as one official battery, I've not noticed anything different between them and the official one (as the video shows)

I use a mix of 3rd party and official mounts, some of the 3rd party ones are identical apart from missing the branding so possibly made in the same factory?!? waterproof case would probably be the only future official purchase I make if I needed one.

All the batteries for the GoPro will have a short lifespan - even the 3rd party ones. The advantage of the 3rd party batteries is that they're really cheap so you can just buy lots of them and swap them out!

I bought the Smatree kit with a 3 port charger and 2 batteries for ~£15. Add the standard GoPro battery and I've now got a set of 3 that can last most of a day if I don't go too mad, and I can charge it from a standard battery bank (the charger is mini usb).

Mounts... depends what you're using them for. For things I know might get bashed around a bit or go near water I'll only use the official ones just in case.

This! On a full day's ride on the motorbike with two GoPros I normally end up taking 8 batteries, typically getting through 6 of them.
