Hey guys sorry if this is the wrong section, but thought i would say a quick hey!

Am new to the forums have been reading through them for a while thought i would sign up n post a bit! Here are a few pics of my setup, should be splashing out on a nice shiny new one next month, as this one is getting on a bit (nearly 3 years old!)

Specs are:

AMD Athlon64 3200+
1024mb Kingston DDR
Soundblaster X-fi
Geforce 6600GT
380GB HDD (1x80 - programs and o/s, 1x300 - music movies more music)
Vista Home Premium
Ultra Dragon ATX Case

All the above WAS good back in the day, and obviously i have upgraded a little, but i need to get back in to the 21st century. Any suggestions on a new rig? Am looking more towards AMD 4800 x2, 2gb Ram, Sata Raid (no idea how to make a raid, but suppose its on these forums some where) Also a graphics card with HDMI, or some sort of HDMI out put. Also looking to get some water cooling. Any help and feed back much appreciated!

p.s please ignore the mess in my room, and the bowls, and glasses, and rubbish, i know im a slob, but my gf hasnt been round for a couple of days so it hasnt been tidied! And the teddies and everything else girly, she screws if i hide it away :o ;)

Hey,

What's your budget, are you looking to spend £400 or £1000+??

I'm sure it'd make suggestions a bit more useful if we (the forum as a community =P) had something to aim for ;_;

Am looking to spend around 500-600 to start with, but bearing in mind i can get the processors, ram, hdd drives, optical drives and a few other bits n bobs for 'cost price'. Considering i work in a computer store im pretty out of touch with all the new technology, and no i dont wear a pretty purple shirt!

Just looking for a nice home setup for playing music, watching films and a bit of gaming here and there, but something that will last while as opposed to a month. Just throw some specs at me with some ball park figures and will see where we go from there, plus im going to do something ' P.I.M.P ' with my case and monitor so watch this space.

you'll defo want a C2D rig mate:

Out of interest, what are the advantages of having C2D over AMD x 2, in my opinion (dont want to offend anyone) but the C2D seem over priced for what they are. Please correct me if my logic is way out. And feel free to make me see the light, but im an AMD man :(

c2d owns anything amd has atm

ive got a £110 E6300 @ 3.15 and its quicker than anything amd do

do a search and see the genral census of opinion

Clock for clock core 2 duo is quicker in most of the tests, take a look at tom hardware cpu selection.
My ES6600 runs at 2.4ghz stock equivalent AMD runs at 3ghz. mine can easily overclock upto and beyond 3ghz.

As a long term fanboy of AMD it pains me to agree. The Core 2 Duo is massively compelling.. and won't be matched till the Barcelon AMD cores come out. If you are looking to save money then AMD is king, just like in the K6 era.

If you go AMD - go AM2, the Barcelonas will drop in to most of them. SO you have future proofing. The other sockets are cheap (939)- but dead end.

Right here goes have been looking around some suppliers today, and heres a quick spec i drew up at work:

AMD AM2 5200+ x2
ASROCK SKT-AM2 ALIVEXFIRE MOBO
2GB DDR2 667
2 x 160gb Sammy SATA
Saphire X1650 PRO 512mb
ASUS DVD-RW inc. lightscribe

all for around £390 inc vat. Bearing in mind im not doing much gaming and is just for general use. not really into intel, i know they have a better performance but hey ho, im an AMD man. Any suggestions welcomed

Are you also an ATI man? If not I'd definitely be suggesting changing that graphics card to a 7600GT, better performance and the same price or cheaper. If you are an ATI man then get the cheapest X1950pro you can as it is significantly better than both. :)

There are threads on Raid in the Hard Drives sub-forum if you do a quick search.

I don't know too much about the motherboard but I've generally found ASRock to be reasonably solid if somewhat uninspired in the overclocking department.

Yeah, im not really going to be going up the over clocking route, just want something reliable that will last a while, but will also take a look at a geforce card. Thanks for the info.

If you want something that lasts a while then you want DX10 for your graphics card. That means an NVIDIA 8800 or waiting for the R600 from ATi. This will give you true longevity. However, at a price!

DX10 will become necessary for many of this years upcoming top shelf games.
