Yesterday i went to see the football which is a 40mile drive away. As the E39 likes to break its cooling system i always keep a keen eye on the temperature.

Temperature stayed in the centre all the way; i was running on fumes (got cashback waiting on credit card so wanted to fill up at shell near destination) so i was keeping speed to between 55 and 60mph for maximum fuel economy.

when i got to the destination i noticed coolant leaking from the car i feared the worst and opened the bonnet but it looked to be a false alarm; the expansion tank cover was loose and coolant was coming from there so i tightened it up and left it to cool down.

After the game i bought some ready mixed coolant from ASDA and refilled (only needed half a litre) but checked the oil filer cap to see the dreaded mayo  After a long journey couldent but condensation build up could it? car rarely gets used for more than 3 mile trips normally so doesent get above 1/3 around the temp guage.

Yup, on a cold engine you'll get some gasses blow past the piston rings and into the sump area until the car warms up and the rings seal porperly. If you're only doing short miles each trip then you'll have a lot of moisture in the oil. Take it for a really good drive to get the oil up to temp and burn off the moisture.
