hi all need help with overclocking

min/max temps 66c/79c so a bit better since i changed the vaults to 1.3 core valts is now showing 1.296 at full load so is that better
Temps are a bit better, with the lower voltage, but as i mentioned earlier check the seating of your cooler, make sure all the pins are pushed through properly. What speed is the fan on your cpu cooler running at when running prime95.?

how i find out about the cpu fan speed?

i will have a look at heatsink does that mean if i take it off i gotta redo the paste i only put a little on size of a rice grain on before should i add a bit more?

ok got it

cpu 2721rpm chassis 1 1061 chassis 2 1041
temp cpu says 53c system 29c
volts cpu 1.2880v

regarding the paste i just read that and what i did was a small rice grain size and smoothed it over totally different to what i was told/read

so i should have ran a line down middle and put the heatsink straight on it and the heatsink would push it out. i sort that out in a bit then.
temps are still below 75 but will redo paste i think

Aye give it another try with the line method, and when you remove your heatsink just check to see how well the thermal paste was actually covering the cpu. A new application may give you a good drop in temps. For example when i had my q6600 @3.0ghz using the arctic freezer my highest temp on any core at prime95 load was 49'c, idled at 33'c.

ok took heatsink off and it was not spreaded very well had gaps in the middle ect so redone it and now im back up and running again idle temps at minute are 32c lowest core being 28c

ok thought i would run a small fft and the temps are 58c max lowest 54c so much better than 90c!! so tommorrow i shall run a full prime test if it passes on 3.0ghz should i try upping the fsb to 3.2ghz and run prime again?

run prime95 small ffts at 3ghz for a couple of hours.. if it passes that fine start to increase the FSB again..

Overclocking is a matter of taking it slow... if you rush things it takes longer in the long run as you arent building clocks from a stable base... after a while you will get a feel for the CPU and motherboard (sounds silly but is true!)

Couldnt agree more pneumonic, ive had my quad at three different clockspeeds, 3.0ghz, 3.4ghz, and my current 3.6. I read and researched different articles about my board and how it performs, coupled with a few of your graphs in the quad core data base. (my bible) i remember the first time i stuck my q6600 to 3.4ghz with a voltage of 1.4125 (ran p95 for 8 hours but temps were high) 77'c on highest core, then i read your threads in the quad db, stuck my q6600 volts to 1.3750 (1.2750 vid chip) and i sort of knew the chip would do higher on the 1.4125 voltage, and it did, currently running at 3.6ghz. on 1.4125 gonna try for 3.8 when i get some new sharkoon 2000rpm fans for my TRUE.

morning all well im up to 3.2ghz ran small fft all ok now running prime temps around 50c which is much better since i redone heatsink(cheers setter)cpu volts on 1.3 cpu-z saying 1.288v ram is on 356mhz 1.1 ratio 5.5.5.15 been running since i got up at 5am(F1 mad)plus wanted to get on with this,so if all is well should i push it a bit more up the fsb,im starting to get the idea of this just need to understand how to set the ram timings ect for my corsair.cheers for the help so far and your patience i hope we can get this pc up to a safe overclock i think 3.4ghz is gonna be the limit what you reckon?

Nice one rick:) i only got in at 5 am, from the pub. but good going mate, i would say 3.4 would be as far as i would go at the minute. im lucky that my q6600 has a vid of 1.2750, it's currently running at 3.6ghz under a thermalright ultra extreme cooler with 2 1500 rpm fans to cool it. had a freezer 7 which took me to 3.4ghz but the temps were to high for my liking, 77'c on 2 cores 71 on the other 2. changed to the true 120, my load temps at 3.6 are 68-68-62-62, im gonna lap my cpu and cooler to try and drop/even the temps and push for 3.8ghz

been on the good old guiness have we!!lol im just mad and get up to watch fomula one when its on (go hamilton go!!)i shall of course let ya know how things go today hoping it will all go to plan urs sounds good 3.8 crumbs that be good lets know if u do i will keep it at 3.4ghz i think thats plenty of power to run games ect for a year lol

Tonight was budweiser and brandy (got a lot of money this weekend lol) ill be hoping to reach 3.8 when i get the chip and cooler base lapped, and stick two 2000 rpm fans on it, i normally run the rig at 3.0ghz to save power, have a few overclocked profiles saved in the bios, 3ghz, 3.4ghz. only use the 3.6 settings for benchmarking, btw hope hamilton wins the championship (and im a ferrari fan, just love them red cars lol)

crumbs 2000revs put some wings on and it will fly lol but that all sounds good,im sure in time i be going done that route lol (seems the race this morning is going a bit wrong for hamilton at min should be ok tho still to win championship)

Thats the fun thing about overclocking, when you achieve a certain speed you eventually want more, im by no means an expert on overclocking, but ive read a lot and picked up some great advice on ocuk to help me along the way. (if i can oc anyone can lol) and if it does try to fly ive got me trusty shotgun to bring it back to earth:D

Its more a matter of temperature and voltage, the more volts you stick through the cpu the more heat it generates. The q6600 is notorious for generating heat. a lot has to do with the vid and the batch no of your particular chip. if you take a look at this thread youll see some of the more extreme overclocks on quad cpu's

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17779323

A lot of theese chips are run under water cooling, particularly the higher clocked cpu's, some (and they are very few) are run under extreme air cooling. noise wise water cooling i think would be pretty quiet (have no knowledge really of this) but the extreme air cooled versions will be using very powerful fans, 2000 rpm or more in some cases, with lapped cpu's and coolers like the thermalright ultra extreme.
