Hi, need help with mobo and psu

I would strongly suggest against that PSU (for one thing, it still only has a 4pin CPU power connection, not that it really matters unless you are doing a lot of overclocking), for a lower price you can get a better quality PSU like this. Here is an in-depth review of this Corsair PSU.

May I ask what your full PC spec is?

Also, what is the make and model number of your current PSU?

That new PSU says it also has a 4 pin PSU cable:

1 x 4pin CPU connector

What is your current PSU and have you tried it?

The 4 pin CPU connector from a PSU will fit into 1/2 of the 8 hole socket. I'm running a sandy bridge board this way at the moment.

Both will work.

Important life-lesson #1:

NEVER SKIMP ON A PSU.
Cheap generic PSUs will not be able to put out wattages that they claim - nowhere near infact. They also suffer from low amps on the 12v rail/s so are unstable. Often suffer from power fluctuations that can harm components.
Should one go 'bang' it's liable to take out the entire PC.

For that reason you'll need to spend a bit more and stick to quality, premium brands.

The PSU brands I'd be looking at are XFX, Antec (and to a slightly lesser extent Corsair).

Your choices:

XFX Pro 650W Core Edition

Corsair TX650W (added bonus of being modular).

Or the more costly Antec TruePower New Modular 650W

Okay. thanks for your replies. I would rather just egt a psu that has the 8-pin because im planning on getting a new video card anyway.

The specs will be as follows:

- What i have and plan to put in my new build-
Zalman Z9 plus Case
Gigabyte 880GM UD2H AMD DDR3 Motherboard
AMD Phenom II x4 Quadcore CPU @ 3.40 GHz
GieL 4GB Ram 1600MHz DDR3
XFX ATi Radeon 6850HD Video Card
Might Throw in a H50 or H70 cooler, may go with just an air cooler too. not sure.

-In my old system, old pc-
Some random 5year old acer mobo
AMD Athlon II Dual Core @ 2.00GHz
Asus HD4770 Video Card
400W Ocz PSU

If you're going closed water loop (i.e. H50) get the Antec Kuhler 620 - it's what the HX0 series should have been, including fixed leaks and better temps.

Failing that the Akasa Venom or Thermaltake Frio are among/the best air coolers for AM3, respectively.

Also, save yourself £12 and get the Phenom II X4 955 - it's the same as the 965 except 200MHz slower at stock, which isn't an issue if you overclock it anyway :p

If you can stretch to it, this HD5850 is actually faster than the HD6850 you've specced :)

+1 to all of this

For a PSU for this system I would also echo Cookeh's suggestion of the XFX 650W core PSU. It's great value and gets great reviews.
