Hi guys,

I am buying a new house and want to set up a home network. I have a little computer and networking knowledge but by no means do I know exactly what I am doing and want to it. It’ll al be trial and error for me.

I want to set up my sever/network in the loft.

I am having virgin media put in the house. It will originally get installed downstairs but I’ll move the modem into the loft. Then I’ll plug in my router, switch and other bits.

The main thing I am lost on is the whole modem mode thing. I “think” I have to turn my modem to modem mode, in order to connect my router and use that for internet but what do I plug my virgin media box into? Does it still come from the modem? Does modem mode just give out tv/cable signal? Or can I plug it into the router?

I am gonna run some external cat6 from the loft, outside and down the house, then back in. So it will all be wired. I just don’t know where the wire should come from.

Thanks guys.

I believe that the media box has its own cable. Their router is just for internet.

My mother had her router upstairs and the tv box downstairs. The virgin cable was split outside the house and fed in separately.

Hi,

Yeah I know the virgin box has its own cable. I meant where do I plug that cable into? The modem or router?

Thanks

????

If you’re using your own router you put Virgin’s router into modem mode and then connect them together with an Ethernet cable.

It’ll all be completely obvious once it’s installed.

Aaah okay, so I will run a cable from my router Straight to my virgin box?

For some reason, I thought I had to connect my Virgin box to the virgin modem (isp).
