Hi everyone,

I am new to overclocking and have a asus p5n-d with 4gb Geil DDR2 800 4-4-4-12 running a Q6600 at 3g with arctic cooler pro 7. GFX is ATI HD 5750

I am struggling to get any higer than 3gb and would appreciate any advice, should I change the cooler??

Also my vid on the cpu is 1.325 and I have been trying to find a replacement with a lower vid but to no avail.

What is the view of what I could push this to?

Thanks and will really appreciate any help that can be given

The freezer pro 7 is not a particularly powerful cooler. It is a huge improvement on stock but still a long way from higher end air coolers.

The q6600 normally maxes out around 3.6 and with a higher end cooler, even with your existing VID, I would expect you to be able to hit 3.4 without too much difficulty.

If you are into massive radiators and air coolers then look at something like the prolimatech megahalems, thermalright ultra extreme 120, thermaltake silver arrow, or noctua nh-d14. (All stocked by ocuk I believe).

If you want something smaller / quieter you can look at the corsair hydro series or antec kuhler series. However their main advantage is only size and noise to a degree, they wont cool any better really than any of the aforementioned air coolers.

Hope that helps. Also if you want to push your overclock a bit further then you could think about relaxing your ram timings a bit

Hi Bluesky thanks very much for responding

in terms of the dram timings what would you suggest as they currently run 4-4-4-12 at 2.1v should I go to?

also any advice as to vcore HT NB etc would be really helpful
Im currently at 1333 multi x9
vcore 1.3125
ht 1.3
nb 1.3
sb auto

also in terms of cooler I use my system as a HTPC and also gaming rig so fan needs to be as quiet as poss etc any advice as to which of the coolers you mentioned above would be the best for this setup. Also all 4 ram slots are currently being used.

Thanks again and I do really appreciate the help

leave the ram timings at stock speed and timings, so if its rated at 4-4-4-12 then leave this alone.
also in the memory divider is the bios, make sure the ram is set at 800mhz (400mhz x 2 as its ddr2) or its stock speed, this way you know the ram is not interfering with the overclock.

before we go further, run intel burn test or prime95 and see what your max temps are.
use coretemp or realtemp to monitor the temps.
what is your max temp?
do not let it go higher than 80.C.
if your test is in the mid 70s then dont overclock it further,
if its in the 60's then you should get a bit higher.

raise the vcore another couple of levels (1.35ish) and then raise the fsb to 344 (344 x 9=3100mhz or 3.1ghz)
run test again and if its stabe and under 80.C then go back and raise the fsb to 355 (3.2ghz)

your vcore can go upto 1.5v, so you have plenty of room, but dont forget, more vcore = higher temps ;)
also is the ram 2x2gb or 4x1gb?, if you have 4 sticks, then raise the northbridge (NB or MCH) a couple of levels

ps. is the ram the blackdragon series? if sso i have the same ram, and by increasing the ram vcore from 1.8v to 1.9v i got the ram to run at 510mhz (or 1020mhz)

read my other post for a more detailed explanation http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=20598051#post20598051

thanks again for response I will test later tonight.

The ram has a sticker on the side saying 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1v but when originally installed bios had it running at 5-5-5 etc.

I am looking into a new air cooler to try and improve things but need something that will do the job but still fit in the antec fusion remote max htpc case.
