Hi all, been shopping at overclockers for some time now, and never knew there was such a huge populated forum. Gotta say, there is a lot of info about almost everything.

Anyway, i need some advice on which RAM i should buy. Firstly let me tell you what it will be going with hardware wise.

Intel i7 960
Gigabyte G1 guerilla - 6 x DDR3 2200/1333/1066/800 other speeds also supported according to their website.
ASUS GTX580 direct CUII
Will be running Windows 7 HP 64bit.

All these items i already have, just not assembled yet, so won't be changing anything. Also RAM will be DDR3, and think, i want around 8-12gb in total.

I am considering overclocking the CPU, but not extremely.

Intel's website state this CPU uses 800/1066 RAM, but if i get 1333 or 1600 mhz, would i be able to run it at that speed easily? Any links to info on how to achieve best ram/cpu speeds to get the best performance out of them. or any info you can tell me.

The PC when built, will be used for gaming, and also Photo and Video editing.

Hopefully i've described/listed all the info you might need.

Thanks for taking the time to read all this, and hopefully it's in the right place too.

Rich.

Hi and welcome to the forums.:)

Ram wise, for your board youll need a triple channel kit, either 3x2gb, or 3x4gb. 1600mhz ram is more than enough. Id go for 12gb, something like theese.

a good guide here on overclocking the 9** series cpu's.

Also make sure you have a good aftermarket cooler, as theese cpu's run pretty hot when overclocked.

Thank you for helping, would those ram sets run at 1600mhz without changing anything, or would they need a little help to run at 1600mhz?

Been reading all sorts about ram speeds and cpu speeds, and think i may have confused myself lol

Depending on the BIOS you have (if its a touch/click BIOS it's really easy), it can be just a few clicks. I don't think the G1 Guerilla has this feature though, but you can just google it, and set the RAM speeds manually by following a couple steps.

I can vouch for the Corsair Vengeance kit, looks nice and I have 8GB in my own system :)

At stock cpu speed, you can set the memory in bios manually to run at 1600mhz. Once you start overclocking youll have to play about with the multipliers and base clock settings to achieve certain ram speeds. For example, im running my cpu at 4ghz on 20x200 bclk, this gives me a ram speed of 1600mhz using an 8x memory multiplier, 8x 200 = 1600.

So hopefully, if i have control of the memory multiplier in my bios, that's what i do, great.

read more info on here now, and all seems to be coming more clear, thank you.

Rich.
