Hi there, do you think this temp is a bit too high?

Hi there got an i7 build here and was wondering if the temps should be this high?
heres the specs
i7 920 d0 @ stock - cpu cooler noctua nh-u12p
gigabyte ex-58 ud5
6gb ram
XFX radeon 4870 1gb
Antec 300 (only has the stock fans)
temps I get on idle are 37-39c full load gets 55-57c with prime95

Depends a bit on ambient temperatures, but I'd say that's pretty good.

Below 80 is nice, below 90 is good enough. Over 100 is a bad idea though.
 
Hehyeah I know, well the overclock for it (@ 3.8) that overclockers did for me the temps were at 55c idle and full 90-95c, think its worth it to have the overclock ?
Plus do you think adding 2 fans at the front might help? might get gtx 580
I've seen others with i7 920 with the same noctua cpu cooler getting much cooler temps than I do, was just wondering what you guys thought.

The antec 300 comes from the school of thought that says the more holes, the better. I'm in the other camp, so would immediately block off the side fan and whatever other holes I could find. SImple front to back airflow is where it's at. The fan blowing air up at the back is a good thing though.

Fans at the front will help, but probably not as much as you'd expect. There's better things to blow money on than fans.

80-85 is absolutely fine. There's a reasonable chance of you lowering that if you spend hours playing with the voltages, were you so inclined. As to whether it's worth keeping the overclock, I've spent days (possibly weeks) trying to get an extra 50mhz out of my computer. It's periodically loaded pretty heavily though, and the decrease in time taken to finish calculations is thoroughly appreciated. If you're not driving the cpu to 100% load and keeping it there for days, the overclock wont be worth as much to you as it is to me.

It's still potentially a fun thing to learn about though. If 3ghz is more than enough, undervolting will decrease your electricity bill and how loud the computer is. So it's still worth spending some time in the bios.
 
Mmm thats a high temp for that cooler, especially for that vcore, id check to see if the cooler is on right, and/or if to much TIM is applied.

I would try lowering the vcore anyways, as you should'nt need it that high for 3.8.
 
And tbh, the noctua nh-u12p isnt a very good cooler, it wasnt very good on an s775 q6600 at 3.8ghz, hence i quickly reinstalled my TRUE black.
 
i run at just over 4ghz and my vcore is set to 1.275 and 1.28 for over that to i think i had it at 4.1ghx so id say your vcore is over high for what your set to .

im using an adapted h50 cooler but never go over 60 deg load

Great suggestions guys, after some testing I've turned it down to 1.2 and its gone down to about 80-85c, the cpu cooler and TIM (using AS5) I've sorted out twice with no change in temps either way.
Soon I will probably have it on my desk instead of underneath aswell as blocking that side vent, I can see what you mean, all I can feel is cold air escaping there - that would be useful elsewhere, all that might get me below 80, have to wait and see.

Dont think I'd be getting a new cpu cooler any time soon but would anyone have any recommendations? One might catch my eye later on.

Ok I've blocked the side vent and taken it from under the desk and its now around 50c idle 75c load, that seems quite ok doesnt it?
