i am running vista home premium and want to know how to disable hibernate mode so if i press the sleep button on the keyboard nothing happens, can you help??

You can no longer disable hibernation through the Power control panel.

You will need to right click on "Command Prompt" in the Start Menu and select "Run As Administrator" then run the following command: powercfg -h off

(edit: typo)

I thought vista was supposed to be easier to use? Having to disable hibernation through the command prompt? Good lord.

Is that different to just changing 'Hibernate after:' to 'never' in power options?

Neither this nor the command prompt actually solves your problem - you don't want to disable hibernation, you want to stop the sleep button doing anything.

Click 'Choose what the power buttons do' in Power Options and change the sleep button to do nothing.

You can also delete the hibernation cache on the disk clean up facility. That apparently will kill hibernation.

i was just using the search to find out why my hibernate has gone missing and i think you've told me why, i did a disk clean up yesterday so i musta killed it.... any idea how to get it back??

Yes the real problem is getting the hibernation file back after it's been turned off. Couldn't believe i had to do it through the command line

Hey <De@thW!sh>, to get the hibernation file back, simply type "cmd" into the start menu search bar and run it with administrative rights. Once the cmd window appears, type the following:

powercfg -h on (Press Enter).

Now if you open up the "Disk Cleanup" program, you should now see under the "Files to delete" option, "Hibernation File Cleaner". :)

well i've dont that but still no option to use hibernate but i'll try the power key as thats what i had it set to.

it may reappear after reboot but i'm off to work now so i'll find out in the morning.
