I was just curious if anyone uses the hibernation (aka standby S4 mode) feature in windows (on your desktop PC's)? I never used to but recently I use it all the time. A lot of the time I have some windows open (especially when programming) that I want to resume using when I come back and hibernation just saves the system state to disk. The other main benefit is that starting the computer takes a lot less time and all initial delay before your computer is ready to use is non-existant because they're already loaded.
Hibernation is also a no-power state which means it uses the same amount of power as the computer does when turned off and can be unplugged. I also use standby (S3 mode - Suspend To RAM) when I know I'm going to be away from my computer for a short time as it is pretty much instant-resume. I was wondering if anyone else uses these power states? The only disadvantage I can think of for hibernation is that you could have problems if you change the hardware while it's hibernated.
I am energy conscious and like to do my bit by turning off lights when there is no one in the room and not putting TV's into standby but I think hibernation is a good idea.
