High bandwidth VPN's

Given a VPN will generally add 10ms to your connection at minimum, I really don't have a clue why you would want to use one for Xbox 360.

Besides, if whoever did it last time had enough bandwidth to saturate your downstream, they could probably frig the VPN server you are on as well - they are almost always bargain bucket boxes shared across thousands of customers.

Have literally no idea how this makes any sense.

I'm guessing your playing competitively on gamebattles? I can assure people here that there are kids that ddos just to win a game by claiming your connection is too laggy or even kicking you out of the game and therefore you losing as this has actually happened to myself.

Try not use a VPN as it will negatively impact your ping, instead look at your router settings or invest in a better one.

people people! this is a serious matter, ive had many a DDOS attacks! lucky the virgin media supper hub is set to notify me by email when one happens! id be lost without it! ;)

Router ain't going to do jack.

Well thanks to everybody who gave serious and helpful responses. I have decided to just go with the new Draytek router and implement as many security features as possible.

Thanks.

To be perfectly honest, all you have done in this topic is say the opposite to everybody else. But with no supporting evidence to back it up. What do you suggest for my situation?

A cheap consumer router does not have the horse power to block a decent denial of service attack. How fast is your downstream?

you generally need enough bandwidth to cope with the attack in the first place before you can start filtering it.

This is my current VPN..

Can't complain eh? :)

I had it done a few times to myself when I used to play on live. Since PC gaming I've never had it done. Either live with it or stop annoying people on live to warrant them DDoSing you.

I use Astrill VPN - in my 2nd year now - first got it because BT were blocking server listings playing Battlefield Bad Company 2, which is fine if one of your favourites is available but if you were wanting to play during the evening you just couldn't get a server listing up

playing a game my ping goes from say 30ms to 80ms but it is still playable, they have servers in most countries so you can also use it to gain "local" access to services that detect where you are and try to block you on that basis too

they have a handy piece of software for windows that support OpenWeb only for browsing or OpenVPN that supports everything
they also have instructions on how to setup PPTP and L2TP / IPSec

bandwidth wise I've run a few tests downloading large driver files etc. and I get 1.5mbits -2mbits most of the time and I never need anywhere near that playing games

More pertinently, your connection will be saturated by anybody with half a clue who wants to DDOS you. We (work) frequently see DDOS attacks with 3Gbps+ of traffic, knocking over a Cable/DSL connection is literally childs play.

No router, no matter how good will do anything about this, the traffic will saturate your connection before it hits your router, you need to block it before that point, which you can't do. I have no suggestions, though your problem sounds...bizarre, but your proposed solution will not work. It could possibly be done with a VPN though you'd need control of the other end to drop the traffic there and even then you'd need a box they couldn't DDOS at that end, a VPS is again childsplay to knock offline so that's not much use.

I hate to say it, but 'stop annoying people' is about the best advice in here...

Or play a game that involves less children :P Its unfortunate you cannot do much. Except buy more bandwidth than they can choke up. Best start buying those lotto tickets.
