High CPU temps :(

Hey, Ive just installed an Asus Silent Knight II on my Asus P5E-Deluxe + Q6600 combo in the hopes of dropping my temps to do some decent OC'ing.

However, Im using Zalman Super thermal grease and My idle temp is like 45-50c...

Ive reseated it numerous times (reapplying thermal paste each time, and cleaning the surfaces with thermal remover stuff)

When I run prime 95 its hitting 65-70 at stock speeds

As ive never really done much with thermal compound Im pretty sure Im not applying it right?
Ive tried applying it to the cpu, then to the base of the fan instead, then a little bit thicker then a little bit thinner etc etc yet i still have **** temps.

Any ideas?

Ok, Well I did that, the layer on the cpu was nice and even, the one on the cpu gets lots of brush strokes which is annoying and difficult to get rid of.

However, idles at 35c, when the case is on its side, 50c prime95 temps, when i picked the case up the temps shot up to 100c, and back down again when I lay it down.

So obviously its the pressure from the heatsink, but I cant see any other way of fixing it on :S

i think the retention clip might be bent or something, obviously for the clips to fasten over the hooks on the bracket, the lever is on a hinge so u can bend it enough to clip it onto the hooks, the problem is its supposed to straighten up when u depress the lever, mine doesnt, so its not putting quite enough pressure on.

When the case is laying flat on its side my temps at 34-35c idle, when i stand it up, they jump to 49-50c idle, and by putting a little extra pressure on the heatsink with my hand they drop another few degrees.

Yeah It was a toss up between the thermalright and the asus, the reviews i read were good on both, and the asus is supposed to be a very quiet runner, and a few friends have used them and got very good results.

Wish i had gone with the true now tho lol. Im going to email asus and ask for a new bracket at least, its out of its 14day return period with OCUK now as it was bought for me as a present, and was bought a long time ago =/
