Over the last week or so I've had random crashes and system dumps. Anyway now checking in task manager my cpu usuage is constantly about 30%, sometimes up to 50% with no applications running. I cant see in task manager what process is causing this, and my computer hasnt got that much loaded onto it having only built it a few months ago. Ive run antivirus and spybot but no problems found. Im running 64 bit vista. Is there anyway to track down whats causing this?

What Antivirus program have you had on on your PC and have you at any point been online without an updated AV program running?

I'd slave the drive up to another system and run an indepth virus scan/spyware scan on it. Worked for me in the past.

its proberbly spyware mate, at one point i had 93% CPU usage on 3.4Ghz athlon X2, found out it was spyware, you got anything like ad-aware or any spyware defence?

I had the same it was a virus - in task manager there was 2 processes of "lsass.exe" running, one was the real thing and the other was a virus.

The only way i could get rid of it was to a program called "unlocker" to delete it.

Do also be aware that Vista does lots of things when your PC is idle, like indexing the hard drive to make searching much faster.

For it to be spyware or a virus it usually needs to be actually doing something while it's taking up those processor cycles - the most common thing is it's using your internet bandwidth behind your back - have a look at your firewall logs or even just monitor the packet count on your network adaptor while your CPU useage is elevated.

Well this the first that i have seen anyone have vista 64 infected.
Did you or any other person here have UAC on ?

Just looked at my network adaptor, sent 639,214, received 5,017,536. Ive no idea what this means though, as Im not exactly knowledgable in that field.

Even if vista does a few things while idle, would it be the norm to be at a constant 30% while just browsing the internet.

Another funny thing, when I switched on the pc tonight my firewall wouldnt let explorer start, it said the executable had been changed, so I'm now awaiting the results of a kapersky virus scan. Im pretty careful online usually, so I cant see where Ive picked this thing up, if indeed it is a virus.

Ermm, having looked closer it seems the cpu usage is down to a svchost.exe.
