High End Gaming System

Thanks for the options/discussion - one thing that OCUK looks like its missing is the 3GB 580 cards, they are the ones I want after reading a link posted in this thread (some bloke with 3 screens in a row uses them).

I only want 1 screen but do want SLI, so although thats probably not economical... thats the route I want to go. Also the best i7 CPU, not sure why the i5 is recommended, but if its cheaper surely it cant be better... even if games dont make full use of the thing. Football Manager at least will need a top end CPU to chugg along :)

you're spending 4 grand on a pc to play football manager? :rolleyes:

and why do you not want to go for more than 1 screen? have you ever used more than one screen? I for sure definitely couldn't go back to having only one screen, the extra space for monitoring fb/messenger while playing games is priceless tbh, not to mention the gaming immersion if you went eyefinity/nvidia equivalent.

if you are just using it for gaming, there is NO POINT going for the 2600k over the 2500k as it makes no difference for gaming...

Just cos something is more expensive, doesn't mean its better... :rolleyes: ;) if you really want the most expensive, and, using your logic, 'the best' things out there, get an SR-2 48Gb RAM, dual xeons and 3 gtx 580's....

EDIT: Just saw your post about the laptop.... how much does that thing weigh?! and how thick is it?! :eek: you will get a much better desktop for the same/a lot less money. Also judging by the specs, that won't be very portable...the battery life will be about 5 minutes and it will be like carrying round a bag of bricks...

the reason i5 is recommended over the i7 is mainly down to money. And that fact that more expensive/powerful cpu's dont make any difference in gaming

however, it also depends what i7 your talking about.

the 1366 i7's, ie the 9xx series are actually last generation, compared to the i5 2500K, which is current gen, the i5's actually come out on top due to the improvements in the cpu architecture (except in the case of the six core 990x)

if you really want the i7, then theres the 2600k, which is the only current gen i7. The only difference, other than the higher price, is that it has HT.

the 990X would be totally wasted on games, and even football manager wont be all that much better, it runs perfectly fine on my 920, and HT really makes no difference to the game. I run it with huge database and about 40 leagues running

if you really want to get a top end i7, then you better of waiting for the new ones that should be out sometime this year
 
dont let fancy letters and number fool you into thinking its the best :D.
just because it has "6 cores" or "X" or whatever in its name doesnt mean it will be the best.
im sure everyone here will recommend an i5 2500k over the i7 2600k if its just for gaming.
 
As for why only 1 screen, I dont have room for 3 nor have the inclination for 3... I mean I can barely concentrate on 1 screen in front of me, let alone 3 of the things :D

The other thing is, I wont be upgrading this if I get a desktop - its a buy, keep for 2 years or so, break up and flog... start again from scratch. Ive no real interest in buying a new GPU here and there, or a CPU here and there... im your basic, buy the best I can at the time, milk it, sell it on cheaply for parts... recycle.

As for why I want a laptop, no it dosent need to be portable tbh - ive got one now, all I do is plonk it on the arm of the chair, plugged in... then if I want to play it in bed, take it up there on my side plugged in... or maybe use it in the garden if I fancy some light :D But again, it has to be the best or ill regret it.... as I currently use a mid range Acer and although it does a job for the odd game I play, it dosent top things out and infact im fed up with that.... especially as ill get BF3 later in the year.

Ill get the laptop I think, its easier for me to comprehend as im getting the best bits available for laptops. Plus ill miss not being able to pop the laptop on after sorting the misses out :D
 
OK well get something like my spec but without 3 screens just one will £1300 less and you can change to the i7 if you want doesn't make a difference for gaming as previously said but it's your money do what you like and yes get a 3GB version if you wish because at high res the VRAM makes a huge difference so I would get 2x of these:

Best keyboard for gaming imo, best mouse also for gaming (again imo) really good mat too.

Great screen, good size SSD but you could get a bigger one without the 3 screens and get:
