High end gpu's way overpriced

i paid £300 for my 6970 at launch, i'll run this for probably 2 years or sell when the 7XXX comes out for around £150 either way top spec graphics card sets me back circa £2.50 a week over its life time

Because it's all about getting all the money out of our pockets, and into their bank accounts. This, however, they are bound to do, one way or another so.......My advice is to sell organs in order to obtain the best card available when you upgrade. I got my HD5970 a couple of years ago and have no regrets. If I hadn't, I'd have been unhappy with performance and tried a slightly better card etc etc and overall been worse off, and have been wrestling with game settings and everything else into the bargain. I've been there and done it. As things stand, 2 years on I'm running BF3 on ultra as smooth as butter, just like every other game since I bought the card. Best thing I ever did.

Which organ did you sell for the HD 5970?

It's also difficult to get an accurate picture because retailers really do gouge the prices as well.

If you think OCUK or any big retailer is paying anything close to the prices charged, especially when volume purchasing, then imo you're just deluding yourself. I know of a business to business channel that is selling 6990s for under 500 Euros (~£450) and still making a significant profit. And the consumer is meant to feel like they're getting a bargain when these cards are on This Week Only or whatever for "only" £599.

Then again it is supply and demand at the end of the day, it's sound business logic to charge what the market is willing to bear and so long as there are enough people out there prepared to shell out then you can't really blame them.

As a consumer it does almost feel as if the top-end graphics card market is run like a cartel with both the OEMs and the retailers in on it. £700 for a graphics card is flat out ridiculous, there's too big a price differential there to be explained away by inflation, etc.
