High IDLE temps...

Hi there!
My Phenom 965BE (stock cooled) seems to have rather high idle temps, around 55 Celsium. Here in Greece it's 24-25 in the room, a bit more outside.
Normally i'd think it's the #$@% stock cooler that came with the CPU, but i had to reconsider when i noticed that, under heavy load, temps didn't surpass 62, that is only 5-7 Celsium higher than idle! I checked with Coretemp and Speedfan.

What should i do? Is this dangerous?
Ignore Idle temps and do nothing?
Replace stock cooler?
Open case and check if everything is seated correctly?
Re-apply thermal paste?

AMD recommend max temp of 65c for the cpu.

I would have a go at reapplying the thermal paste and check the case airflow.
 
My case is Thermaltake's Element V. It has some pre-installed fans, maybe i can add a couple to reinforce airflow. Besides that i probably could change CPU fan speed from Mobo's utility. I now have to start from 40% at 24 celsium and reach 100% at 55 points Celsium. Should i tamper with that?

Dusted it out recently?

As others have said you could try re-applying the thermal paste see if that lowers your temps.

I'm running an AMD Phenom II X4 B60. When I had to drop back to my stock cooler for a few days last year, temps were 45-50°c with the ambient around 22°c so around 55°c with a slightly higher ambient would probably be about right for the stock cooler.

An aftermarket cooler will drop those temps though. When I went for aftermarket air-cooler I dropped about 12°c and then I moved to an AIO water cooler which took another couple of degrees off.

I haven't re-sitted the stock cooler (or replaced paste) for exactly a year. Another thing i remembered is that i haven't installed (and tweaked from BIOS) AMD Cool N Quiet. What about you guys? Do you consider it important and have it running? Could this be the cause of high IDLE temps ?

Cool & Quiet is a CPU throttle. Basically when you're not using your computer it actively 'underclocks' your CPU to reduce power consumption and reduce heat output, which then in turn means your CPU fan doesn't need to spin as fast.
 
Is this what you have for fans?
1x 120mm Colorshift front fan(intake)
1x 120mm Turbo front fan(intake)
1x 120mm Turbo rear fan(exhaust)
1x 200mm Colorshift top fan(exhaust)
1x 230mm Colorshift side fan(intake)
They should do a pretty good job of keeping case cool.

Make sure everything is clean and new TIM as already suggested.
I'm guessing it will still be running hot meaning a better cooler would be advisable before summer.
As Resident said his ran 45-50c in 22c so 55c in Greece is probably about right.

I don't know what coolers are available in Greece and you can't post OcUK competitors' sites here. Give use the names of some cooler makers and we can than suggest which of their coolers would be best.. and please give us your price range.

I have opened and cleaned PC a couple of months ago.
My line of thinking is that a new apply of thermal paste is needed and i also decided to replace stock cooler with Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2. I was considering better (and bigger) coolers, like Coolermaster 212 EVO, only to find (in my dismay) that my Element V case, even being Full Tower, couldn't accomodate it! It specifically warned NOT to buy HSF bigger than 155mm!
Maybe i 'll also add another exhaust 200mm fan (top).
Funny thing is, here in Greece temps keep rising, so now (11.30 in the morning) room is 26 and outside is already 30!! I better move fast!!!

P.S. Stock cooler's fan is running at 3800rpm when idle and 5500 rpm under load! Does that change s'thing stated above?
I can barelly hear the in-game dialogues!

Had this with my 965 BE, the v-core is set to automatic in the BIOS which is something like 1.44v, drop it down to 1.275v-1.30v stock and you'll see a massive reduction in temperature. More v core means more heat and at stock speeds you can get away with lower v core than automatic!

Hmmm... I tested with Speedfan and it gives Vcore1=1.31 and Vcore2=1.92. How do i proceed and
if i tamper BIOS will it affect the Phenom's performance under load,like gaming? I wouldn't want to underclock my CPU, right?

I am surprised that Cool and Quiet from AMD isn't getting many votes of confidense, by the way.....:confused:
