High latency in WOW

I've been with Plusnet for years now, never really had any bother with ping.

If you do go with a new ISP, keep clear of Virgin, they're having the same problems apparently.

It seems Virgin have been having problems for months now.

Also, do not touch Orange!

Recently switched to fast.co.uk - awesome so far.

Me and the missus used to play together all the time with no problems whatsoever but about 6 months ago she started getting huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge pings. I mean serously massive (2000+), to the point where it just disconnects from the server.

I use my PC regularly off the same wireless network with no problems at all, we even tried using the ethernet port on the laptop on a different houses internet connection and it was exactly the same. :(

Can anyone help :p?

Sorry to hijack the thread somewhat, it just seems a good place to put it seeing as I was thinking of starting a thread anyway :)

Nope, there's been threads over on the WoW forums though, it's your ISP.

Actually wrong. Its not zen at all its Telia ( yet again ). Zens technical manager has posted on the wow forums.

The problem seems to be how certain wow servers are being routed internally in the Telia network. Some servers are fine and other not for certain ISP's. Tracerts clearly show the problems are 2 or 3 hops into the telia network and not a problem in anyway with zen.

All we can do is hope that someone asks telia to sort it or that something happens and the problem goes away. This happened to nildram last year and apparently telia couldnt care less and refused to investigate. As can be seen on the threads above the problem is clearly telia and not zen so there is no point hoping that complainingto zen will fix anything, there is simply nothing they can do about it. The problem is with telia and telia alone it seems.... maybe blizz can get them to do somehting but im not holding my breath.

Seems the options of getting an isp thats NOT effected by telia's servers of doom are decreasing by the week!

OMG!

Had this problem with Nildram in 2006. Made it impossible to raid. Entered BLW only to be disconnect or sufferred horrendous lag in the middle of the raid.

There was a post with 30,000+ views and all we got from blizzard was 'we are looking in to it'.

One of the reasons I quit tbh the support was shocking and we all said at the time that it was the pierage through Telia's network, and they didnt give a toss.

Then agian it was clearly obvious Blizzard didnt give a toss either, and with all their money i doubt me quitting made any difference. Maybe it will when I never buy any of their games again. :(

Yes lets all boycott Blizzard games because unrelated companies have sucky networks!

Would just like to play devils advocate for a second and point out i've never had an issue with VM, and actually have a ruddy good ping (5 - 10 in CSS and 30 - 40 in WoW).

Telia are a huge network. They support far more than WoW servers and at the end of the day, people who play WoW mean pretty much nothing to Telia. Why would they? Also, Blizzard cannot force Telia to do anything. And even then, they can't exactly post things like "SOrry guys, Telia are a bunch of assbags, you'll have to suffer" on the forums because it's bad for business. Would be really bad if they put too much pressure on and Telia pulled the plug altogther eh? I'm sure they make a killing from Blizzard renting from them, but they were making a killing before that too.

I had problems all of the weekend pings of like 300 - 600 it was rather stupid.

Then all of a sudden this morning about 2am ish it went back to its usual 23ms!!

I know its not easy keeping a network running but come on Virgin your meant to be professionals...

Im with Virgin. Daggerspine server, working fine for me, granted, is a low pop server, but still nothing over 90ms yet.

Eve is running fine too... Maybe the server your on is too full?

Colin

now, my torrents are very slow with virgin.

Because of the huge amount of money Blizz pay Telia? :/

VM are fine for me (ex-BY)...never any probs.

Two different machines in the same house? With vastly different pings? Sounds like something on her machine is hogging resource in the background. First thing I would do though is disable any Addons she is using in WoW - some of them can throw the rattle once in a while.

Short of that, start turning off some things in Windows and cut back on your graphics settings then maybe you're at the point where a fresh install of WoW then windows might be required.

I had problems with VM for months until it settled down after last summer. I think the main problem with high latency is problems on Telia as most of the traceroutes seem to be having issues with their servers, for example, current issues are now with Russian players and basically Blizzard don't care as it's outwith their network.

I think the only way Blizzard will take action is if enough players stop subscribing and report the problem was due to latency and lack of support.

Just for info. It is possible for 2 players on the same ISP to have wildly different pings depending on servers. This zen problem seems to be realted the servers in the paris datacentre, with the telia london-paris hop causing the problems. Those zen players on non paris data centre realms have normal pings.

I tested this myself last night.. i play on doomhammer and it was 800+ so i made a char on a non paris server and it was 56ms!!. This helps to show that its not zen par-se thats the problem but the internal telia routing.

Wether anything gets done about it is a different matter

I had the same problem last year on Freedom2Surf. Was unplayable in raids then in battlegrounds. I switched to Zen which cleared it up but then I stopped playing a few weeks later. On Be now and it seemed fine when I tried it last night.

If Freedom2Surfs problem was anything to go by it will never gets fixed, so if you need to play get another isp.

How do you find out if you're on a paris server or not? Myself and my boyfriend regularly get huge lag when the rest of our connection seems fine and no-one else is complaining of server lag, and we're on VM.
