Right this is for a friend not myself he just asked me to post it so bare with me on the details.

Recently he's had a lot of problems with his memory getting stuck after playing games or randomly after running demanding programs and just not returning to normal after closing said programs/games. He checked the memory it was fine even did a clean install of windows and it still did it. It's also not showing up in Task Manager whats using all the memory and i haven't a clue what to suggest as I've never had a problem.

Btw PC spec is as follows
Amd phenom x4 940
Asus Crosshair 2 Mobo
8gig Crucial Ballastix 800mhz
Evga gtx 285
and windows vista with SP2
500GB WD
CORSAIR 850W PSU

EDIT:
Would the pc still trying to read a floppy drive that is not longer there be the cause?

Memory getting stuck?

The memory usage under Vista and Windows 7 is completely different to what you'd see with Windows XP and previous operating systems.

Is there an actual performance issue?

The floppy drive edit makes even less sense!

I would also like to know more about this as I have a similar problem.

Windows 7 is always using about %50 of 4GB of RAM even if nothing is running.

Sounds like normal windows Vista or 7 memory usage. I've not used it that much but it's supposed to keep programs in memory that you're not using to speed up loading of them next time.

If you use another program that needs the memory that windows has preloaded a program into, windows will let go of it without any problems. You're not losing anything.

So if I upgraded to 8GB of RAM would it only be using %25 then or would it just hold on to more programs?

Thanks by the way. :)

Read into Superfetch for Windows 7, you'll be thankful for it :) - awesome feature

Edit: Just saw that you use Vista! it's dreadful in Vista, it only works to some effect if you have lots of RAM, but it still works (Using spare memory to speed up loading times etc, why have lots of memory if it's not going to be used?)

From what my friend tells me it does seem to hinder performance. I must admit my Win 7 uses about 28% of my 4gig but no noticeable decrease in performance that I've seen. I've even tried convincing him to upgrade to Windows 7 from his vista but to no avail lol.

Mine's average of 23% on Win 7 with 6gb & 35% with Google Chrome, iTunes and Wow :)

Not once there is there speed difference for me :)

I'm having a similiar problem.

My sustem uses about 1.5/1.8 gb then from normal use or gaming I end of with nearly all the remaining ram as "IN STANDBY" with none free. This has caused problems where I ahve bene playing a game, quit to desktop then maybe half hour later relaunche dthe game. It has resulted in me being booted out of the game to desktop quite abruptly and windows aero suggesting a go into basic mode etc

Any ideas?
