bit of advice as I normally buy new, the mrs wants a mini, I have found a 2011 one in the "right" colour. Its a good spec, but it has 84k on the clock.

in nearly 4 years since registration its done tonnes of miles. Its great condition FSH etc. but the miles is putting me off, we want to keep this for 4 years at least and its gonna do 12k a year so its gonna be end of life at the end. On the flip side £5k for a 2011 mini with high mileage could pay off if it doesn't fall apart.

Only weird thing is it was MOT'd 14 October 2014 then again in July 2015, which seems a little nuts

Any motors gods got any advice?

It's not done 'tons of miles', it has done 84,000 miles.

Whilst this is high for a 2011 Mini it absolutely isn't high for a 5 grand car, which is how you should be judging it.

Seems like a fairly good opportunity to get a fairly new car for a budget that would otherwise normally buy something much older. Will it give you trouble in the future? Perhaps it will - it's unlikely to be totally flawless - but then so could any 5 grand car.

thats kinda what I was thinking, but I know nothing about mini's we were looking to spend up to £8k but saving £3k on this might just pay off. if it was a derv I would expect the miles but surely whoever bought it would be better off getting a cooper D lol.

Your biggest problem is that you don't know enough about the model in question. Find out more about common faults and when certain big bills crop up. Owners clubs, online owner reviews, servicing schedules if you can find them will all help.

The fuel economy between a petrol and diesel mini isn't that far apart tbh.

If it's been well looked after it may be a better choice than a low mileage example of the same age. E.g. There's some sense in going for an 11 plate with 84k miles and all the services done on schedule, to an 11 plate with 20k miles that's been sat on a driveway most of the time.

Unless as Zefan says there's something that's expected to go soon on it.

You have 2 choices, Buy it & stick 2k in the bank just in case or leave it & Buy a low mileage one for a lot more. Personally I do think it's high mileage for the age of the car but then it's only 5k.
I think I'd leave it & find a low mileage minter as if you do buy the 5k one & it goes wrong & is hassle your Missus will drive you Crazy with moaning. At least if you buy a low mileage minter there's nowt she can moan about even if it does go wrong.

Never underestimate the ability of a woman to moan. They are just as likely to moan at you regardless of whether you buy a brand new car, low mile minter or higher miles cheaper car.

Bank the money and buy earplugs.

Another way to look at it is if you put 12k on in 4 years. After you're done with it, it will have about 132k on the clock which is about right for a 9 year old car.

My 1.2 Petrol Suzuki Swift was bought, brand new in Q3 2010 (5 years old).

Its done 87,500 miles since then - mostly highway driving. All dealership serviced.

I've not had to replace anything on it, runs like a dream.

So yes, 84k miles in 4 years is fine.

As long as the history checks out fine you should be good I would say. My father once did about 45k in one year in a Ford Galaxy (diesel, so may be irrelevant) but he stuck to the servicing schedule and he's not had any problems (touch wood).

We've got 3yr old fiesta vans at work with way over 200k on them, they all drive just fine tbh.

They are scruffy inside but serviced regularly and want for nothing, mechanically they are probably far better than 80k milers that Doris has driven to the shops for years....

Mileage is ultimately a number, you buy on overall condition IMO.

Full dealer history my *** had one stamp in the book at 29k and an invoice for a water pump and oil change that's it in 84k, why say full dealer history in the ad on again confirm that on the phone just a waste of time!

Oh dear! Stay well clear of that one.

Why would anyone not get a new car serviced properly during the warranty period?

and i've just done it on my own car, mot'd end of October when it wasn't due until January - as i'd rather advertise the thing with a full mot

Especially as the mini has condition based servicing and will bother you on the dash for oil change etc!

I think it had been reset as said oil change not due for 15k on computer but oil looked like sludge.

Such a waste for a not that old car avoid citiwheels in surbiton just felt dodgy

Any bought a 2009 with 55k full dealer service and a year left on mini TLC XL service package thing from a specialist mini place miles away, worth it was clearly in another league to this one
