High mileage

Yes, but I imagine it's likely been used by a rep or similar doing long journeys (so in theory majority of the car will have had an easy life e.g. clutch, brakes, gearbox etc).

If the price is right it could be a good deal. However be careful if there are any "big" mileage based services that need doing and haven't necessarily be done e.g. Timing belt (although no idea if that engine is belt or chain)

As always worth buying on condition rather than purely on age/mileage - if it looks worn out/badly treated then it probably is.

looking at the mot history it looks like its due brakes on the front and the windscreen has an issue. I'll give it a miss for now. Looks bloody comfy though :)

Hard to say really. Personally I've not had great experiences with high mileage VAG cars. Make sure it isn't one that guzzles oil.

The last thing I'd call a Polo BlueMotion is comfy :)

Also, I don't think there is a BlueMotion Polo with a 1.6TDI engine, is there..?

It's a Passat BlueMotion I think:

Repair as soon as possible (minor defects):
  • Offside Front Windscreen damaged but not adversely affecting driver's view (3.2 (a) (i))
Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
  • Offside Front Brake pad(s) wearing thin (1.1.13 (a) (ii))
  • Nearside Front Brake pad(s) wearing thin (1.1.13 (a) (ii))
  • Offside Front Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (5.2.3 (e))
  • Nearside Front Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (5.2.3 (e))
  • Offside Rear Tyre has a cut but not deep enough to reach the ply or cords (5.2.3 (d) (i))

So, front pads and potentially discs, and tyres all round.
Windscreen sounds like it's just got a chip or two.

Doesn't sound too bad tbh if the price is good enough.

To be fair the first thing I checked was the mot history and thought if they rectify everything on that list then it's a nice car. It's a bit far to be going for me though if it comes to toing and froing. If they were local I'd take a chance.

I have a Nissan to look at tonight hopefully which I would be happier with engine wise.

It's not quite the same thing, but my hateful diesel Octavia has just passed
225,000. It's not a 14 plate however.

the old octavias have one of the best engines ever built.

there was a video on youtube where a guy took one to be completely stripped apart to see what the inside of a 300K mile engine looks like. the mechanic said it looked like a 40-60K mile car and if this is what it looked like after 300K miles and was regularly services no idea why it couldn't to 300K more.

he said regular servicing was key. he did also say since he had now completely stripped it apart he had disturbed carbon which was keeping everything held together. so him taking it apart could be the reason it may now only last another 100K miles instead of 300K.

so basically servicing matters more than mileage.

Car Throttle did, The Octi had over 400,000 miles on it, He also drove it too the nurburgring around it and back on one tank of fuel. Those engines were pretty dam good.

yeah the key is regular servicing. all the manufacturers these days have put cars on "long life" service plans. which means long life fluids not long life for the car.

so basically a 10,000 mile oil change turns into a 20-30K mile oil change.

so a car could hit 100,000 miles and only had 3 oil changes. you would expect it to be closer to triple that for a well kept example with most having around double for ones just serviced according to what they usually do.

I saw that car throttle video, would have been good if they showed the bottom end stripped aswell to see the wear on the crank, as that’s what normally goes before the top end on many diesels.

I think long life oils and long service intervals don’t help prolong the life of the car engine nowadays.
