High ping while playing games via wireless?

Hey everyone i recently started uni and i bought my pc with me to do a bit of gaming on when i get bored. I am in a shared house with 4 other people and in every game server i go to join im getting a ping of 400 atleast! This means im getting constantly kicked for high ping :/ im with virgin media and we are paying for a 30mb download speed but i get about 1/2 mb in actuall download speeds. The wireless is a "NETGEAR RangeMax USB Wireless Network Adapter" is there anything i can do or am i going to have to try and snake a wire around the house?

The router is about 5-6 meters away and its through two walls. It's an old miners cottage, i have never seen those things before i will take a look at them thanks

Hey ok its a virgin media router I don't know the exact model but it is pretty new and the walls are stone I think. I am going to go with the product you linked thanks
