High Ping??

My ping in game seems to go up to over 100 whenever i speak on ventrilo, anyone have any ideas why?

I have 20mb Virgin media, a Netgear Router with latest firmware, hardwired into the router. I play Counter Strike source and compete so using ventrilo for communications is vital.

Try setting Vent to use less bandwidth - lower the quality settings slightly.

Are you doing this whilst STM'd btw? Your upload speed is reduced quite a bit when it kicks in (though it should still be enough)

this is a relatively recent issue i'm having last couple of months maybe. I take it by STM'd do you mean throttled down speed, if so i dont think so as i dont really download much.

I had a problem on BT where I would begin to lag 2/3 mins behind the ventrilo conversation due to BT's traffic shaping. (Ventrilo was forced to share the same bandwidth as peer to peer which was capped to 6k/s, not enough for it to function properly)
Is it possible that ventrilo and your game are being forced to share the same bandwidth causing the rise in latency?

its possible who knows how Virgin media shape their traffic? I'm gonna try using mumble instead of vent see if that helps (Mumble uses a lot less bandwidth and is instant voice chat) Could it be a problem with my router, i've read people saying that Netgears aren't top notch and that linksys one with some custom firmware are best. Anyone know about that.

It seems like ventrilo is major bandwidth-hogging.

Try using netlimiter to cap the amount of bandwidth it can use and see if that helps. Or reinstall it / try other programs.

Oh, and Teamspeak is way better =)

teamspeak is terrible.

my vent did that for a while, think i fixed it by forwarding the ports for the clan server i used to connect to.
either that or it just fixed itself in time, cant remember.lol

damn that makes me feel lucky!

as for my ping issue, we have moved servers now and i ping 15 and no lag even when talking on vent so i'm happy now

i think it may have been a problem with RTL servers and Virgin media, because it seems fine on any other server.
