High Pitched Noise Problem

Alright lads, well another PC problem with me. :(

Last night my computer randomly decided too switch itself off. Once I had realized it had gone off I tried to switch it back on again. It wouldn't work but I heard a High Pitched noise coming from the PC possibly the PSU.

I think I pretty much confirmed this by switching the PSU switch off and the sound had gone but once I switch it back on again its back.

Doubt very much its anything to do with my mobo as I've recently just had to get a new one of them.

I did overclock my cpu about a week ago but only from 2.0Ghz to 2.50Ghz and the temperatures where fine. So I doubt that is the problem. My CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ and my power supply is a Hyper 500W PSU.

Any quick response would be greatly appreciated.

unlucky with the hiper problem, I've got a hiper 580w version and the caps have leaked resulting in whining noise.
remove that PSU before it takes your hardware with it.

Common 8800 *problem* moomoo, google it and you'lll see ;)

Mine has only recently started doing it. Gets louder the more fps it produces... ati tool causes it to make a sort of siren noise from mine (wee woo weee woooo :P), can be quite funny :D

I was OT :(, it's a ridiculously common "issue" with the 8800's, although it happens on other cards also (ATI & nVidia).

There seems to be no real solution, people have rma'd card upon card, changed psu's, tried in different systems etc to no effect.

If it changes in pitch and volume in relation to the FPS it should be fine

Sorry silly me, i got confused between yourself and moomoo. The noise from the psu, is it like a warning buzzer or a squeel? If the latter it's as Phatzy has said, PSU on its way out/gubbed.

Afaik, those psu's are notorious for problems (dying a horrible death) :(

It only happens during black screens in UT2004

Funny thing is when I don't have music on, I can hear the "squealing" in my headphones. Talk about ear ache :p

On topic please lads.

My OCZ Psu has always done it, I've never had any problems with it. BTW I've had it for about 7 months.

Edit: Just read that your computer turned off, does it turn off randomly all the time or was it just the once ?

It was the first time it switched itself off mate. And I wouldn't know because it hasn't turned back on ever since lmao :P

Just ordered a new PSU so hopefully that will fix it!
