High pitched PSU sound?

Hi guys =)

Recently upgraded and I now have a quiet processor and graphics card which is all well and good...but now I've noticed my PSU gives off a really high squeel (my parents can't hear it so it's only just in normal hearing range for young people).

Do all PSU's do this as part of being a transformer/is there anything to do to stop it? It isn't the fan making the sound it is the PSU itself.

PSU I'm using is a OCZ 420W.

Many thanks!

PW

It could quite possibly be some of the capacitors. This is a rare(ish) but ducumented problem with some PSUs and Motherboards. If it is that that is causing it, then im afraid a replacement is the only way to fix it as far as i know.

i am having this exact problem with my antec trupower, only i cant RMA it because...stupidly i lost the invoice...so i'm stuck with it till i want to buy a new one...i'm bearing with it :D

OK so if I buy a new PSU - it wont make this high pitched sound?

Any recommendations on a good silent PSU that wont need replacing when I next upgrade to DX10 stuff? (Are there any new PSU standards in the pipeline?)

If PSU's are likely to change in the next year I'll probably just put up with it until the next generation come out.

Hi PitchWhite, I made a similar thread a week or so ago.

For the money & quality I can recommend these PSU's

Enermax Liberty Modular Silent 400w or 500w

Tagan - Easycon Modular Silent 530W PSU

I been using ANTEC PSU's for like the past 5 years but just had two of them go bad on me so I'm avoiding them for a while. If your not sure what wattage your PSU should be check out this link:

eXtreme PSU Calculator - v2.0

Pay attention to the bit at the bottom, as it means you need to specify a bigger wattage PSU if you intend it to run 24/7 for a few years without going *pop!*

get a seasonic, good money well spent IMO, i'm buying the modular 500w from OC next friday, its v-good value for money, that is if you have the money of course :D (it's not ultra cheap  )

Seasonic M12 Modular 500W Silent ATX2.0 Power Supply (CA-005-SS)

or linky

scroll down a bit ;) all good but costly

think that 500W will be ok for whatever the future will bring in the next few of years?

I don't mind paying out for something good but I'd like it to last me

You should get it RMA with OCZ. They do have good customer service and will get you a brand new replacement.
