High pitched turbo whilsting on Saab 9-3 - is this a bad sign?

I had a look at a 20004 Saab 9-3 1.8t (150bhp) and it makes this whistling noise during acceleration. The pitch increases as you accelerate and go up the rev range. It is literally a high pitched humm/whistle that increase in pitch as you go through the mid>upper range. Whoooooouuuuum. No noise when idle, or on hitting the accelerator in neutral, so I'm assuming its turbo related.

No such noise on the three 2.0t (175bhp) that I drove.

Surprsingly, I can't seem to find any meaningful information on this on line. Most of the info seems to relate to the old pre 2002 hatchback 9-3, rather than the 2002+ saloon. Some information says is indicative of turbo wear ie loose impeller rubbing against the casing, others say its just how turbos are, but the latter doesn't make sense given my experience of the 2.0t cars.

Is this likely to be a minor issue eg. hose, pipe, or should I be majorly concerned?

Also is the 1.8t (150bhp) the same engine as the 2.0t (175bhp) apart from the map?

Funny you say this, just yesterday i caught an episode of Wheeler Dealer and they had a Saab 93 with a lack of power, and ED said theres a common fault of oil starvation with these engines that wears the turbos out, causing to much end-float on the impeller and shaft.

I have a saab turbo and I cant hear the whistle you speak of, although I also have a renault turbo and that has a quite loud whistle, so from that I can draw no conclusions.
also use to have a 309 turbo that had a loudish whistle.

bullit

Spoke to a Saab indie today and he said, he said that the cars don't make any whistling noise, faint or loud. Definitely turbo or tubo system related, but would only be able to pinpoint the fault by putting it up on a ramp, with fault code readers, tests etc.

In both the 9-3 Diesel's we've got at work you can hear the turbo whistling noise during acceleration, far louder than any other car I've driven. You nearly think it's an ambulance coming up behind in the distance! I first heard it three years ago on one of them, and it's still going strong today still making the noise... so I wouldn't be surprised if they've always made the noise from new.
