So if you had the choice of any monitor but a fixed system of one card 970/780ti/980

Would you rather play on say 4k with lowered settings

or

Would you rather play at say 1440/1200/1080 with maxed settings

all FPS would be equal for questions sake

Res isn't the be all and end all. Keep in mind that people were perfectly happy with the PPI that 1080p on a 24" gave for many years.

after looking at benchmarks 1440 looks like sweet spot for one card atm for maxed settings

You can't run max settings with one card at 1440p though (unless its a pants game), you will get close but have to turn down a few settings.

As you said 1440p is nice, 1080p looks horrible now compared to it, I wouldn't want to go below high settings either.

Bioshock Infinite - 2560x1440 - Ultra Quality + DDoF
Frames per Second - Higher is Better81.5

Battlefield 4 - 2560x1440 - Ultra Quality
Frames per Second - Higher is Better53.7

Crysis 3 - 2560x1440 - High Quality + FXAA
Frames per Second - Higher is Better62.4

Thief - 2560x1440 - Very High Quality
Frames per Second - Higher is Better51.5

All on a 1 780ti

Now play the games its not the same as running a bench.
i have 2 770's not the best i know but i get 90fps in battlefield, but in a high action parts i have drops to 30/40. so if you was starting with max of 53 the drops would be 15/20 and unplayable
bench info is not the be all and end all that ppl think it is

A single 970 can run 1440p maxed, a 980 can breeze through it?
Same for the 295, 780, 780ti, Titan Black, Titan Z?

EDIT: A single 680 runs BF4 @ 70-90fps, you might want to check your 770's.
My 2 680's get over 110 FPS in BF4.

I think it would have to be 4k with lowered settings.

And then cheat and just play older games so you could have max settings again.... :D:p:D

Games liek BF4 etc are hardly demanding, plus benchmarks are pointless, try BF4 on a 64plyr map your fps will drop.

Here in my office I have a 4930k/980gtx@1400mhz on a 1440p screen and while it does run any game, it won't run everything at MAX.

plus I need at least 50fps otherwise it annoys me as its not silk smooth.
