for high resolution photoshop work (2560x1440) is having more memory better or make no difference

eg:

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 with 1.5gb
or
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti with 1gb

what is having more memory better for , gaming ?

Yes more memory the better. The 480 is quite a lot better card

think you need more ram for that and a ssd i only game so not up on stuff like that. A better card will help tho

The 480 would be better than the 560Ti anyway :)
Check here:

480 vs 560

If you have the money to spend, get the 480!

Also, yes more memory will help you in gaming and may possible help you in high resolution editing. As I have no experience with photo editing I cannot comment positively on that :)

Does Photoshop ustilise GPUs for processing? It used to be RAM and CPU dependent, if it can leverage CUDA then the 480 is the winner.

It would be worth checking benchmarks to see if the extra VRAM makes a difference, because often it doesn't, unless your res is like 2560+

Thats only if you intend on playing at 2560x1440 resolution.

In your case you might be better of with a 6970 2Gb.

Has more ram, and is similar performance to a 480.

Otherwise if it must be a 480 or a 560 then 480 hands down.

photoshops 3d capabilities are quite limited. out of the box it does not use cuda and simply runs on opengl, so pretty much any card can deal with it fine. as for your query, i would just get the best card you can afford along with a lot of system RAM.

the card will be mainly for photo manipulation at high resolution

though this is more and more in lightroom and much less with photoshop, so im not sure how important cuda is anymore

with the odd bit of gaming now and then, but high res FPS would be nice

the more i read, the more confused i get

though the 6970 or the gtx 480 do seem to be the two choices in my price bracket

in my opinion, anything up to and including 1080p is fine with 1gb, past that you should ideally be looking for more

that being said we don't know what games to come will be like

photoshop is more system ram dependent than gpu dependent, when i load up very large/ hi res photos my system ram can go above 4gb usage, but the latest version of photoshop uses cuda i believe, so therefore the 480 is by far the better card to get.

ok just did a little test, loaded up a 12.1mb photo with res of 2560x1600, system ram went to 2.35gb and gpu usage went up to 745mb, did a few small alterations and system ram went up but gpu ram stayed the same.

It's not a super heavy user of it, occasional filters and what not. It's not like it's Max or something that would really benefit. As has been said before, more System RAM is the best boost.
